Endless Outdoor Adventures Await in These 5 Small Towns in Missouri
Check out the most outdoorsy towns in Missouri, from hiking and paddling destinations to charming communities surrounded by natural beauty.
There is nothing quite like a day outdoors. Whether in the mountains, on the lake, or even staring at a twinkling night sky, Mother Nature has outdone herself. Fortunately, here in the Show-Me State, there are many extraordinary destinations in the Great Outdoors. Whether you are an in-state traveler, weekend road tripper, or just an outdoor enthusiast looking for someplace new to explore, the following are just five outdoorsy towns in Missouri for your next adventure.
1. Rocheport

Rocheport is one tiny Missouri town that is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. This small river community of approximately 200 residents may not seem to have much to offer, but it boasts a rich history with Civil War roots and Lewis and Clark heritage, along with countless outdoor adventures. Rocheport is best known as a premier stop along the Katy Trail. As the longest rail-trail in the U.S., the Katy Trail attracts cyclists from all over the country, and Rocheport's portion of the trail features gems like the Rocheport Tunnel, a 240-foot former train tunnel. If you’d prefer a more relaxing day outdoors, rather than on the seat of a bicycle, consider taking a cruise along the Missouri River, or head to the popular Les Bourgeois Vineyards to enjoy a drink outdoors with panoramic Missouri River views.
2. Hermann

Hermann is one of the best hiking towns in Missouri, as you’ll enjoy easy access to the Katy Trail as well as many other scenic trails in the Grand Bluffs Conservation Area, Graham Cave State Park, and the Daniel Boone Conservation Area. If you want to spend time right in town, there are many city park trails to enjoy, as well as the Hermann Heritage Trail, a self-guided walking tour through the town’s historic German district. Also, due to Hermann’s location along the Missouri River, head to Riverfront Park, where you’ll find river access, fishing opportunities, picnic areas, and even primitive campsites.
3. Camdenton

Camdenton is certainly not a hidden gem, as this town near the Lake of the Ozarks draws in more than 5 million visitors every year. But once you arrive, you will realize why it’s one of the best base camps for outdoor adventures in Missouri. Many activities center around the Lake of the Ozarks, from boating to fishing, or for a little more quiet, head to the Little Niangua River for kayaking and canoeing. You can also spend a day or two at Ha Ha Tonka State Park, where you’ll find many scenic hiking trails and unique geology to ogle, or even have a unique adventure on an underground tour of nearby Bridal Cave. If you time your visit just right, make sure to attend an outdoor performance at the Ozarks Amphitheater.
4. Arcadia

For even more outdoor adventures in the Ozark Mountains, you cannot overlook the small town of Arcadia. This community is tucked in the St. Francois Mountains and is an excellent spot for adrenaline seekers. Nearby Elephant Rocks State Park is home to 1.5-billion-year-old boulders that you can climb. And make sure you don’t forget your hiking boots, as you can tackle the challenging Mina Sauk Falls Trail as well. This 3-mile loop trail takes you to the highest point and the tallest waterfall in Missouri—it will challenge you physically and mentally, but the Ozark Mountain views are stunning.
5. Eminence

As one of the best adventure towns in Missouri, Eminence is known as the "Canoe Capital of the Missouri Ozarks." This small town of approximately 500 residents is the perfect base camp for a day filled with floating or paddling along the Current River and Jack’s Fork. Also, just 15 miles north of town is Current River State Park, a beautiful place for a picnic, and where you'll find hiking trails and two lakes. Echo Bluff State Park is just a short drive away with even more scenic hiking trails, paddling opportunities on the Current River, and gorgeous views of the massive, postcard-worthy limestone bluffs.
Yes, I realize this is only a small number of the best outdoorsy towns in Missouri, but each one has so much to offer, including loads of small-town charm.
