Encounter Not One But Three Natural Caves On Missouri’s Natural Wonders Trail At Meramec State Park
One of the best things about hiking is we can never really get bored. We can hike the same trail over and over again, and we'll always discover something new - budding flowers in the spring or the enchanting way the ice freezes the branches in the winter. Even if you've already hiked the Natural Wonders Trail in Sullivan, Missouri, take an hour or so to follow it again. You never know what natural wonders, like its three natural caves, you'll discover along the way.
You won't find too many challenges along the short and sweet 1.3-mile Natural Wonders Trail at Meramec State Park. The trail is easy enough for the little ones.
Described by some as a leisurely walk through the woods, the scenic trail may have some overgrown spots and it can get wet enough that you'll need water shoes, particularly after it rains, so be prepared.
Ticks are typically abundant along this picturesque path, so you might want to bring tick repellent and check for ticks after your hike.
While the trail is easy, it's one of the quieter paths in Meramec State Park, so you may not run into anyone else, except deer and other local wildlife, during your hike.
Three natural caves sit along the Natural Wonders Trail, including one with a...
Gate blocking the entrance. The unfenced caves may be closed due to bats; look out for signs nearby that alert you to their possible closure.
If you're hiking during the summer or when it's warm out, stand by the cave's entrance, where you'll likely feel a cool rush of air that's been described as "nature's air conditioner."
Part of the pretty path runs through the Meramec Mosiac Natural Area, where you'll likely pass a variety of plant life and....
Wildlife. If you enjoy bird watching, you've come to the right place.
So much natural beauty - glades, meadows, and a spring-fed creek - awaits, so you might want to take your time to soak it all in. Even if it's not your first time on this loop trail, you'll likely discover something new.
