Missouri's bursting with hidden gems - gorgeous places that will make you feel as though you've stepped into a fairy tale. While many of Missouri's most beautiful places were formed by Mother Nature herself, others are delightfully man-made. Still, others are a beautiful combination of both, like this underground winery in Missouri that promises so much more than a delicious glass of rosé. Discover pure natural beauty as you stroll through a magnificent hidden cave and sink your teeth into scrumptious, homemade goodies and drinks at this unique cave winery in Ste.Genevieve, MO!
Embark on a unique experience when you visit Cave Vineyard & Distillery, in Ste. Genevieve, that's home to 14 acres of lush grapevines.
Start your visit at the winery and tasting room, just above the Saltpeter Cave.
Here, you can engage in wine tasting and purchase some of the winery's dry, semi-dry, sweet, and semi-sweet wines, such as the Grotta Bianco, Dry Chambourcin Rose, and Sweet 'n Spicy.
And, if you've got a sweet tooth, stop by the Biscotti Bar, open from April through November. There, try an assortment of flavors such as chocolate chocolate chip, Grandma's almond, and gingerbread.
Every delicious, dunkable biscotti is handmade with love using an old family recipe.
You'll also find Baetje goat cheese, Askinosie chocolate, and a few other charcuterie treats to go with your wine-tasting experience.
Then, with wine and biscotti in hand - and maybe a picnic basket, if you brought lunch along - begin the picturesque stroll to the Saltpeter Cave. Along the way, stomp on a few grapes at the photo opp station.
Find a seat in the Saltpeter Cave, which holds around 100 guests. While not much is known about the cave's backstory, it was used in the 1700s to mine Potassium Nitrate (commonly known as Saltpeter.)
Today, wine enthusiasts regularly picnic in the cave that promises cool temperatures even during the sweltering days of summer. The unique setting ensures a refreshing wine-tasting experience from start to finish!
Overwhelmed by the beauty and selection and can't choose? Opt for a sweet, dry, or semi-flight.
That said, don't be surprised to find a few cave-inspired creations on the drink menu... like the Cave Bourbon or the Cave Rock Off Dry.
The wine cave's hours of operation vary by day and season, so double-check details before planning your visit.
Talk about a fantastic escape! This one-of-a-kind underground winery is the only wine cave that we know of in the country - and we're pretty fortunate that it's right here in MO! To learn more about the Cave Vineyard, visit their official website for hours, drink menus, and more.
