6 Hikes With the Best Sunset Views in Missouri

Who says Missouri can't be famous for its sunsets? We sure don't. These incredible hiking trails show off just how beautiful Show-Me State sunsets are.

The Show-Me State is called the "Show-Me State" for many reasons, all of which are 100 percent worth showing off to anyone who lives, works, or visits here - epic views and amazing hiking trails are two of my favorites. The best trails, of course, also have epic views. So I've compiled a shortlist of some of the all-time best hikes in Missouri where you can also enjoy outstanding sunset views. Start with these, catch a sunset or six, and fall madly in love with Missouri all over again.

1. Post Oak and White Oak Trail - Mark Twain Lake State Park

Hidden away near Stoutsville, Missouri, is a 2.7-mile adventure just waiting to be discovered. It's rated as moderately difficult, thanks to some steep parts, but it's so very worth the effort. You meander these hillsides until you reach the iconic overlook of the south fork of Mark Twain Lake, which is the perfect place to hang out and watch the sun sink below the horizon. This trail is a mashup of the Post Oak and White Oak trails, and I think it's the best way to enjoy the scenery. Why pick one or the other when you can do both?

2. River Scene Trail - Castlewood State Park

With some of the most incredible views in all of Missouri, you can't possibly go wrong or regret an adventure at Castlewood State Park. I strongly recommend doing the River Scene Trail, which is quite popular and for excellent reason: it's outrageously scenic, offering some of the most picturesque landscapes in the state. The trail will lead you along the edges of cliffs (be careful!) before going uphill to the top of the rocks. Enjoy awe-inspiring views of the Meramec River Valley, the river itself, and the seemingly endless Missouri sky.

3. The Katy Trail - Katy Trail State Park

I love this trail's name, which is funny because I also love this trail. It's a double-whammy! The Katy Trail is nothing short of legendary, though, coming in at an incredible 36.3 miles long. This hike is for those who love a good, easy hike without all the challenges of climbing mountains or scrambling rocks. Hiking, birding, and mountain biking are all popular activities here. Be sure to visit Cooper's Landing. It's one of the most amazing places in Missouri.

4. The 1000th Mile Trail - Harry S Truman State Park

The irony of the The 1000th Mile Trail's name is not lost on me, considering it's just under a mile in length. That being said, this trail is magnificent, offering some one-of-a-kind, hard-to-find overlooks perfect for sunset lovers. When you begin the hike, you'll meander up to a bench overlooking a glade. Then, wander to the bottom of the glade and find yourself immersed in a world that looks ripped out of a fantasy novel; the views of Truman Lake are incredible. Watching the sun go down here is nothing short of spectacular.

5. West Ridge Trail - Weston Bend State Park

This awesome hiking trail in Missouri, known as the West Ridge Trail, is just under two and a half miles long and features some truly awesome perspectives of the Missouri River Valley. The trail is rated as moderately difficult, thanks to some exposed roots from large trees posing a tripping risk. Sometimes, it can be muddy, so wear good shoes in preparation for this possibility. It's worth noting that the trail does intersect with two others, and if you choose to branch off with those, you can make your adventure last much longer.

6. River Bluffs Loop - River Bluffs Park

My final suggestion on this little list is the River Bluffs Loop, which you'll find at River Bluffs Park. At three miles long, this hike is quite easy and popular among families with kids looking for the best views in the Show Me State. Hiking and walking are popular here, and so is landscape photography - for obvious reasons. You'll immediately notice just how beautiful this trail is, and to be fully immersed in it is a certain kind of special you just have to experience.

If you love the great outdoors, Missouri is an amazing state to visit (or live in). Everywhere you turn, you'll find stunning cliffs, rolling hills, lush forests, and all sorts of other adventures. Fishing, hiking, hunting, camping, and other outdoor activities are much-beloved here, and I think you'll get exactly why as soon as you arrive.
