This Just Might Be Missouri’s Most Underrated State Park

Missouri easily has some of the most beautiful state parks in the country. We are lucky to have access to these gorgeous natural areas free of cost! Castlewood State Park might be one of the most underrated Missouri State Parks. This stunning park has beautiful views, miles or trails, river access, and provides an opportunity to enjoy tons of outdoor activities. Whether you love to hike, bike, or fish Castlewood is the perfect destination for anyone looking to reconnect with nature.

In the early 1900s, the area now known as Castlewood State Park was popular among St. Louisans looking to party.

Long after the resorts and dance halls have closed the park is now a popular destination for hikers, bikers, and kayakers.

The park was acquired in 1974 and officially opened in 1975. There is over 5 acres of land on both sides of the Meramec River.

Castlewood also butts up to Lone Elk Park and the World Bird Sanctuary.

The hiking at Castlewood is great! There are a lot of stairs to climb and some uneven pathways so these trails are considered 'moderate' for skill level.

Once you make it to the top you can stop and rest while you take in the amazing views from the river bluffs.

The view makes the trip to the top all worthwhile.

Castlewood State Park is considered one of the best parks for mountain biking in the St. Louis area.

You can also go horseback riding along some of the trails at Castlewood.

Dogs are also welcome at Castlewood. Your pup will have a great day by the river or on the trails.

A unique aspect of the park is the tunnel under the train tracks.

It is especially exciting when a train is speeding by right above your head!

The park closes 30 minutes after sundown so you can snap some great pictures during the 'golden hour.'

Overall, there are many beautiful areas for a photographer to capture. Definitely check out this park if you're interested in nature photography.

The Meramec River is perfect for kayaking.

There is also a great little beach for those looking to take a dip this summer. Be sure to wear a life jacket if you do decide to go for a swim!

Castlewood is truly one of the most peaceful places near St. Louis.

While most people come for the views there are is an easier trail that still provides stunning scenery.

Check out the Stinging Nettle Trail that runs along the Meramec River bottom.
