The Little Known Hiking Path Near Moscow, Idaho, Is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year
Bring in the new year outdoors while exploring the Headwaters Trail, a moderately-challenging hike near Moscow, Idaho.
I love the start of a new year. It’s a time when I’m motivated to make changes, reach my goals, and try something new. This upcoming year, I have only one goal to help me become a better version of myself and that is to spend more time outside. To do this, I plan to lace up my hiking boots and tackle some of the best hikes in Idaho, such as the Headwaters Trail near Moscow, Idaho.
Moscow is one of my favorite small towns in Idaho. It is located in the heart of the Palouse Region with beautiful rolling hills in every direction. Moscow Mountain is one of the best places near Moscow for a hiking adventure and while there are several trails in the area for both hiking and mountain biking, Headwaters Trail is certainly a favorite.
The Headwaters Trail features a lollipop design if you begin at the parking area along Foothill Road. At the beginning of this route, you will follow the road on foot until you reach the beautiful loop through the forest.
In total, you will hike approximately 5.3 miles and you’ll certainly want to be on the lookout for mountain bikers — this is a popular trail for the sport. And make sure you wear sturdy shoes and come prepared for a climb as you will face some inclines on your journey. Throughout the Headwaters Loop, you can expect to climb more than 800 feet in elevation — this isn't an easy stroll through the forest.
Early in the year, you may come across snow on the trail. This is a great place for snowshoes if you want a little winter adventure or strap on some snow spikes to help you keep your footing. If the snow has started to melt, I'd recommend you wait to tackle this trail as it can become quite muddy.
Headwaters Trail is a favorite among locals but for those new to the area or traveling through, this hike isn't well known. While you may come across a few people as you explore the Headwaters Trail, you likely won’t see a crowd, especially during the early months of the year, making this the perfect spot for some quiet time outdoors.
And while the solitude is something you’ll love on this journey, so are the views. You’ll enjoy a little bit of everything on your hike from thick forests, lush flora and fauna, bridges, and mesmerizing overlooks.
Every season of the year has something to offer on this hike from wildflowers in the spring and summer, vibrant fall foliage in the autumn, and snow-covered trees in the winter. Whether you plan your first hike on January 1 or wait until later in the year, the Headwaters Trail near Moscow will truly impress. It is one of my favorite first hikes of the year.
Have you hiked the Headwaters Trail in northern Idaho? What is your favorite hike in Idaho? And if you do plan to tackle this trail in the snow, make sure you bundle up and have the proper gear for the journey.
