The Boldest And Biggest Meteor Shower Of The Year Will Be On Display Above Idaho In December

Here in the Gem State, we love our night skies. In fact, we are home to the country’s first gold-tier International Dark Sky Reserve, and we couldn't be more proud. But coming in December 2022 is one exciting event that no night sky enthusiast will want to miss: the Geminid meteor shower. This is expected to be the boldest and biggest meteor shower of the year and one that is certain to leave you inspired.

The Geminid meteor shower is unique because, unlike other meteor showers we see on Earth, this event is caused by an asteroid, not a comet.

The asteroid is known as 3200 Phaethon, and many years ago, it collided with another object, resulting in a stream of particles. This asteroid circles the sun every 1.4 years, and when the Earth passes through the particles, it creates this spectacular meteor shower.

On a clear night and with no light interference from the moon, you can see up to 150 meteors per hour during the event's peak times.

The first mentions of the Geminid meteor shower by astronomers were recorded around 200 years ago. This year, it will occur between November 19 to December 24. However, the peak night to watch the show is December 13 into the morning hours of the 14th.

To enjoy this spectacular show, head to some of the best dark sky destinations in the state. Avoid areas with any light pollution as this could make many meteors difficult to see. The best time to see the Geminid meteor shower is between 2 a.m. local time (when the moon sets) and sunrise.

The meteors are expected to be fast and bright, creating one extraordinary show. It will certainly be a night to remember.
