This Is Why Pelican Pete’s Is the Best Waterfront Dining in Georgia for Peak Summer Vibes

Dock, dine, and vibe at Pelican Pete’s. This is Georgia’s waterfront summer done right.

I grew up in Georgia in the ’90s, so trust me when I tell you I’ve spent my fair share of time on Lake Lanier. In 8th grade, I got the worst sunburn of my life during an Honor Society trip to Lake Lanier Islands. As you know, nothing says “academic excellence” like blistered shoulders and aloe-soaked tank tops. I also remember summer weekends on the boat with my Papa: wind on my face, snacks in the cooler, and that sticky, sun-drenched feeling that only comes from a day on Georgia water. That was summer. And it was perfect… almost.

One thing I didn’t get to experience during my Lake Lanier heyday? A great meal and a delicious cocktail on the water. If I were to go back now as an adult and try to recapture that lake-time magic with a little more SPF and a lot more tequila, I know exactly where I’d head.

Pelican Pete’s Tiki Bar and Grill in Gainesville, Georgia.

Let me start with Gainesville. This north Georgia town is more than just a boat launch spot. You'll also find the lush trails of Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve, tons of charming boutiques downtown, and a community that truly understands the value of sweet tea and shade trees. Whether you're into shopping or just people-watching on a patio, Gainesville has its own Southern magic. And nestled inside all that charm is the real showstopper: Pelican Pete’s, Lake Lanier’s only floating tiki bar and restaurant.
Yes, floating. You dock your boat, hop off, and boom! Nachos, cold drinks, and live music in flip-flop-friendly paradise.

Pelican Pete’s isn't pretending to be a coastal escape. It is the escape. With undeniable lake views, trivia nights, and a music lineup worth planning around (seriously, y'all, check their calendar), it’s part local favorite, part summer destination.

Now let’s talk about the menu, which hits that beautiful sweet spot between "laid-back" and "legit delicious." The Port Royale Burger is a double-patty masterpiece stacked with American cheese, crisp veggies, secret sauce, and served on a brioche bun. Add fries and you're officially winning at lunch. Want something lighter? The Grilled Chicken Sandwich comes with bacon, avocado, and a jalapeño-cilantro aioli that should be illegal in at least three states.

But the star of the show (at least for me) is the Drunken Mussels. I’ll order mussels anywhere, from a white-tablecloth spot in Atlanta to a snack shack in Savannah. Pelican Pete’s version? Perfect. Sweetwater 420 pale ale, chorizo, parmesan, and a crusty baguette to soak up every last bit. If you're not licking the bowl, I don't know what you're doing.

Vegetarians and clean eaters get love, too. The Paradise Grain Bowl is colorful and fresh with wild rice, chickpeas, cabbage, and feta. And the Pete’s Chopped Salad delivers with soppressata, crisp greens, chickpeas, and a lemon vinaigrette that tastes like sunshine.

Sides are a whole mood. Parmesan Truffle Fries if you’re feeling fancy, Watermelon for peak summer energy, and Onion Rings because you deserve it. Or, go rogue and get Loaded Potato Salad. No one will stop you.

Now, drinks. We’re on the water. It’s hot. You need a slushie. Lucky for you, Pete’s has freezy drinks in every shade of delicious. My advice: start with the Frosé. It's a combo of rosé and strawberry vodka blended into something so cold and pretty, it should come with a sunset. The Bushwacker is like a boozy grown-up milkshake with coconut rum, coffee liqueur, and chocolate.

Feeling wild? Grab a Pete’s Fishbowl, the Endless Summer version if you're into pineapple, mango, and dragonfruit rum. Just don’t try to drive your boat afterward. There's also the Red Bull Slushie, the Lava Flow, or a classic Piña Colada… each one better than the last, especially when sipped with your feet dangling off the dock.

If you prefer your drinks shaken instead of frozen, the Bourbon Splash and Pete’s Painkiller both bring serious flavor. Think orgeat, lime, nutmeg, coconut—tropical, but still somehow Georgia through and through.

So here’s the move: visit Georgia. Make your way to Gainesville. Spend the day hiking through Chicopee Woods, visiting wineries, or cruising Lake Lanier. Then dock your boat at Pelican Pete’s, grab a frozen drink, order the mussels, and stay for the live music. It’s Lake Lanier, all grown up and just weird enough to feel like home.
