This Is Georgia’s Most Beautiful Old-Growth Nature Preserve

I don't know about you, but I'm fascinated by old trees. Georgia has its fair share — this one, for instance, is believed to be about 400 years old — but it's exceedingly rare to find an entire forest of old-growth trees.

Nestled between the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, you'll discover a special wild place known as Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve. This protected woodland is a little over 1,400 acres in size and contains a special tract of old-growth trees. This particular forest was spared from logging in order to keep the water from the nearby town clean. Today, we still benefit from this beautiful forest that has grown freely for over a century. This lovely yet underrated protected area is managed by the Elachee Nature Science Center, and it features both a visitor's center and an on-site nature school. When you arrive, you'll pay a modest entry fee before entering the park, which contains gentle, shaded trails for hikers to enjoy.

One of the best ways to experience the forest is by hiking the Bridge Loop Trail, an easy three-mile trek that offers a variety of terrain, some modest inclines, and the chance to cross a picturesque suspension bridge. Another popular trail is the Lake Loop Trail, which will take you around a picturesque, wooded lake.

But the trees are what really make this place special. It's believed that the oldest trees within the park are at least 150 to 200 years old.
