There are many things to love about Oklahoma City, but I am particularly drawn to its unique neighborhoods and districts. Places like Crown Heights and Mesta Park are known for their history, architecture, and beautiful green spaces. Bricktown is an entertainment district where it’s easy to find something for everyone. But for a walkable area that is full of color, history, and numerous galleries, you can’t overlook the Paseo Arts District. While Oklahoma City may not be the most walkable city in Oklahoma due to its large size, the Paseo Arts District is one of the best places in the city to explore on foot—you can easily leave your vehicle behind here.

What Makes the Paseo Arts District Truly Stunning

If you are looking for colorful and lively places to explore in Oklahoma City, Paseo Arts District must be at the top of your list. This unique neighborhood is just north of Oklahoma City’s Downtown and is home to dozens of art studios, gorgeous murals, and fascinating art sculptures. You’ll find delightful shops, popular restaurants, and Spanish Revival architecture lining the streets.

The Paseo Arts District was the first shopping district built outside of the city’s downtown area. Established in 1929, the Paseo makes you feel more like you are walking through a Spanish village than a neighborhood in the state’s largest city. As you walk along the wide, curved street that is lined with trees, you’ll notice the Spanish Revival stucco buildings with clay tiled roofs and the colorful art. Fun fact: The Paseo is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Why This Oklahoma City Neighborhood Is So Easy To Explore on Foot

The Paseo Arts District is designed for exploring on your own two feet. This isn’t a large neighborhood, but it still houses up to 20 galleries and more than 80 resident artists. This neighborhood even takes advantage of its walkability by hosting the First Friday Gallery Walk. On the first Friday of every month, the many galleries offer various special-themed exhibits, refreshments, and guest artists. As you walk, you'll enjoy live entertainment and admire new creations of residents and guest artists alike. This art walk takes place rain or shine throughout the year.  

And for one full weekend each year, the Paseo Artist District in Oklahoma City also hosts the Paseo Arts Festival. This free event each May features artists from across the country, showcasing all types of creative works from paintings and pottery to jewelry. There’s music, dozens of food and drink vendors, and activities for the kids. It’s an event where you can park the car and the entire family can experience all that this neighborhood has to offer and then some.

As mentioned before, there are dozens of galleries and artists to see and visit in this historic district. I especially love the unique architecture and the overall Spanish vibe of the area. And I strongly recommend taking the time to stop and admire the art along the street, particularly the large murals. Several murals honor the heritage and history of this unique, walkable neighborhood in Oklahoma City.

If hunger strikes as you walk through the Paseo, there are nearly a dozen restaurants and bars, including a farmer’s market grocery store. You’ll find all types of cuisine within walking distance, from burgers and Southwestern dishes to vegetarian entrees. Stop into the boutique shops nestled in this neighborhood, or discover a new hobby as several businesses offer classes to help you unleash your inner creativity, from watercoloring to sewing.

Tips for Visiting Without a Car

Visiting the Paseo Arts District without a vehicle is simple. You can take an EMBARK city bus right to the neighborhood. Free parking can also be found along the street if you do drive yourself there, and you’ll also find small parking lots and residential parking just outside of the district. It is best to plan your visit during the day, when most shops and galleries are open, to make the most of your time. If you want a full experience, plan to attend the First Friday Art Walks. Just be aware that parking will be more difficult during this monthly event.

Oklahoma City may not be the most walkable city in Oklahoma, but neighborhoods like the Paseo Arts District make it easy to park and explore. Browse the galleries, meet the artists, soak in the atmosphere, and unleash your creativity. The Paseo Arts District is certainly a unique day trip.
