Attached to a Gas Station, This Unassuming Mexican Restaurant Will Take You on a Culinary Adventure
Taqueria Morelia in Florida City may look unassuming from the outside, but step inside and you’ll find a family-run gem dishing out authentic Mexican flavors. With fresh ingredients, handmade tortillas, and bold salsas, it’s a must-visit spot for a true taste of Michoacán.
Growing up in Miami, I thought I knew all the hidden gems the city and surrounding areas had to offer. But my mother-in-law, a true culinary treasure hunter, proved me wrong on our annual birthday trip back home. This year was her 70th, a milestone! And she insisted we try this spot she'd discovered near the Everglades National Park: Taqueria Morelia in Florida City. "Trust me," she said, "it's a must-try." And, well, you don't argue with a birthday girl.
So, we hopped in the car and headed down south, excited for the adventure ahead. Tucked beside a gas station, Taqueria Morelia doesn’t look like much from the outside. In fact, you might even drive past it if you're not looking closely. The exterior is simple—nothing flashy, just a modest "OPEN" sign and a small storefront that blends in with its surroundings.

But I knew we were in for something special the second we stepped inside. The warm, inviting aroma of authentic Mexican cuisine hit us right away. The place had that unpretentious, neighborhood taqueria feel, with simple tables, colorful walls, and a lively buzz that made you feel right at home. The friendly staff, with their genuine smiles, instantly made us feel like regulars.

Of course, I had to start with a Michelada – a non-negotiable for me at any Mexican joint. And this one? Flawless. Fruity, spicy, and with a refreshing limey kick that just wakes up your taste buds. Served in a Tajín-rimmed mug, it was the perfect prelude to my feast.

Since I couldn't decide on an appetizer, my husband chose the Tostada de Ceviche de Camarón to share. A generous mound of fresh shrimp, creamy avocado slices, diced red onions and tomatoes, and vibrant cilantro all piled high on a crispy, golden-brown tortilla. Each bite was an explosion of sunshine, with the coolness of the citrusy shrimp and avocado playing off the satisfying crunch of the tostada. A small container of Valentina hot sauce sat beside it, tempting us to add that extra oomph to our dish.

For my main course, I couldn't resist the Enchiladas Suizas. Corn tortillas filled with tender, flavorful shredded chicken and smothered in a creamy, tangy green sauce. Then, a blanket of melted Mozzarella cheese on top. Alongside came fluffy rice and a simple salad with sliced tomato and avocado. It was comfort food at its finest, and I savored every single bite. Being a seasoned pro, my mother-in-law went straight for her usual: the Caldo de Res. That hearty beef soup smelled incredible, and I almost regretted not ordering my own.
We even grabbed a flan to go – which was promptly devoured in about two minutes flat back at the house. No regrets.

What makes Taqueria Morelia more than just a restaurant is the story behind it. Opened in 2007, this family-run gem is all about sharing their Michoacán roots with the world. Named after their beloved state capital, Morelia, and inspired by generations of family recipes, they're committed to fresh, high-quality ingredients. Their handmade tortillas and delicious homemade salsas—a claim I can personally back after sampling every variety from the salsa bar—are a true testament to that dedication. The Miami New Times even recognized them as one of the "Best Mexican Restaurants," with their "Best Tacos in Town" being a standout. This commitment to quality and authenticity has earned them a cherished spot in the local community.

So, if you're ever near Florida City and craving a true, no-frills Mexican experience, make sure to stop by Taqueria Morelia, located at 961 W Palm Dr, Florida City, FL 33034. It’s tucked away next to a gas station, but once you step through those doors, you're in for a treat. You can check out the menu and get directions on the Taqueria Morelia website. And if you’re in the Homestead area, they also have a location there, too. Whether you're there for tacos (which I’ll definitely be coming back for), ceviche, or to try every salsa on the bar, your taste buds will thank you.
