The Road to Heaven is Paved with Warm Cinnamon Bread from Wicked Bread Co. in Florida

Discover the irresistible charm of Wicked Bread Company, where handcrafted artisan bread, sweet pastries, and fresh flavors take center stage in Plantation, Florida.

For anyone who remembers the ritual of grabbing a gooey Cinnabon during a mall outing, you know the allure of warm cinnamon bread can be hard to resist. For me, that treat often meant parking by the food court at New Jersey’s Rockaway Mall, just to be welcomed by the enticing swirl of cinnamon, sugar, and butter drifting out into the bustling halls. I don’t find myself at the mall much these days, nor do I live in New Jersey, but recently, I discovered something even better—Wicked Bread Co. in Plantation, Florida.

Wicked Bread Co. began as a humble venture in 2020 at Yellow Green Farmers Market in Hollywood, Florida, before blossoming into its very own shop, where Wednesday through Sunday, they serve fresh, warm cinnamon bread until it sells out. But this isn’t just a bakery; it’s an experience with a quirky, Halloween-inspired aesthetic that transforms each visit into something memorable. Cauldrons, witchy brooms, and an enormous mural dedicated to iconic spooky Disney figures set the stage for the magic that awaits.

When I first arrived, the unassuming strip mall plaza offered no hint of the cozy, spooky haven inside. It was a quiet weekday afternoon, and finding parking was effortless—perhaps not everyone was eyeing cinnamon bread for lunch that day. As a newcomer, I was immediately charmed by the dedication to detail; Wicked Bread Co. fully embraces its whimsically eerie theme. Plush pink couches sit in front of a hauntingly detailed mural featuring famous horror icons. Nearby, shelves are lined with vintage trinkets—a miniature apothecary stocked with “potions” in vintage bottles rests atop a fireplace mantle, and a tall, gnarled black tree stretches its bare branches toward patrons. This kind of ambiance in a bakery feels like stumbling upon a secret gem.

Then there are the aromas. Imagine air so thick with cinnamon and sugar that each breath feels as if it’s laced with sweetness. The gentle warmth soothes you, like slipping into your coziest slippers on a cold morning. Every loaf, glistening under the display lights, is topped with a cream cheese glaze, tempting and golden. There’s a hint of vanilla and buttery richness woven through, a delicate invitation to savor the simple luxury of warm bread.

The two women behind the counter greeted me with smiles and a helpful walk-through of their menu, which features both sweet and savory options. For the uninitiated, there’s The Original—hot, gooey cinnamon bread with a perfect swirl of cinnamon and the option of cream cheese frosting. Then there are the specialty flavors, laden with toppings like maple bacon, caramel, and pecans. Savory options include empanadas stuffed with combinations like spinach and cheese or ham, perfect alongside a freshly brewed colada. The flavors, with a hint of South Florida flair, create a lovely balance between classic cinnamon sweetness and comforting, savory bites.

Choosing my first order was easy; I went with The Original as a starting point. Served fresh from the oven, the bread was as soft as a pillow, each forkful gliding through the buttery dough with ease. The taste was indulgent yet balanced, the sweetness of the cinnamon swirl complemented by the richness of the dough without the cloying intensity found in typical cinnamon rolls.

The $10 loaf, far too much to finish in one sitting, is easily reheatable at home—a definite bonus. Starting your morning with a warm slice of cinnamon bread paired with a steaming cup of coffee? That’s a little slice of heaven, courtesy of Wicked Bread Co.
