Anytime we go on vacation we assume we'll come back with a significantly lighter wallet. In some cases, this is true. But it doesn't have to be! With a little bit of planning and some research, it's easy to find activities that won't make you spend a small fortune just to have a good time. And yes, that even counts for a trip to Maine. 1. Allagash Brewery, Portland

One of the oldest and most beloved breweries in Maine offers a tour and tasting room that can't be beat. This is one of the spots that put the state's brewing reputation on the map and hearing their history is almost as great as tasting their adult beverages. Just remember to be 21 or over if you plan on visiting!

2. Saint Ann's Church, Kennenunkport

While they offer worship services, you don't need to be religious to enjoy a visit to St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport. This beautiful spot sits on the coast, offering some of the most incredible views in the state. You can visit the grounds for free and stay as long as you'd like. 3. Moxie Falls, The Forks

Moxie Falls is one of many incredibly beautiful waterfalls in Maine. We love this one because the hike to reach it is simple. It's less than a mile each way to reach the water and when you arrive you'll probably want to hang around for a while to take it all in. 4. Walker's Point, Kennebunkport

The former summer home of United States President George H. W. Bush sits on one of the most beautiful pieces of land in the state. The home has been in the family for centuries and while you can't go inside, the view from the exterior is incredible. There are also some informational plaques to read.

5. The Old Port, Portland

We can't promise that a visit here won't end up costing you something, but we can promise that it's totally free to walk around the cobblestone streets and the working waterfront. If you have the discipline to stay out of the shops the views are beautiful and it won't cost a thing. That being said, we highly recommend you go inside because there's nothing like a local Maine business!

6. Old Orchard Beach, York County

You might want to save this one for the summer, but a quick walk around in the off-season is interesting too. While you'll need to pay for things like Palace Playland, mini-golf and food, there's no charge to walk onto the Pier or the beach. So live it up! 7. Cape Neddick Nubble Lighthouse, York

One of Maine's most recognizable lighthouses dates back to 1869 when it was commissioned by Congress who approved $15,000 for its construction. It's still in use, but you can visit for free for some of the best photos in the state! Plan your visit for December and you'll be treated to the entire structure covered in lights. 8. The Marginal Way, Ogunquit

There's no shortage of beautiful coastal walks in Maine, but this one is a favorite. You'll find it in Ogunquit beginning at Shore Road and running for about 1.25 miles to Perkins Cove.
