The beaches of Maine are a bit different than they are anywhere else, and that's exactly how we like them. But as comforting and pleasant as our rocky shorelines can be, sometimes nothing but a good old-fashioned sandy beach day will do, even if that means it's a bit crowded. If you don't mind sharing your space with others, check out Old Orchard Beach this summer.
Old Orchard Beach is a 170-year-old community, although the area has appeared in historical records as early as 1653. It was named after an apple orchard planted by its first settler, Thomas Rogers from Salem, Massachusetts.
While about 9,000 Mainers live here year-round, summer populations can sometimes reach 75,000.
But even though it stays perpetually packed, you won't find a better place to spend a hot summer day.
The people watching here is fantastic. And considering the beach stretches on for seven miles, you'll always find your place in the sand.
Old Orchard Beach is best known for its iconic pier.
There has been a pier here for well over a century, although this is not the original structure. A series of storms ate away at the old pier for years, and it was finally completely rebuilt in 1980 with wood after a 1978 blizzard destroyed it.
The pier, which extends 500 feet over the ocean, is full of carnival food, souvenir shops, and even a nightclub.
You'll also catch concerts, street fairs, and other events on the pier, especially in the summer.
Maine's top beachfront amusement park, Palace Playland, will delight little ones and grown ups alike.
It's open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and they even set off fireworks every Thursday night. Riding the Gondola Ferris Wheel at sunset is incredible.
If you need a little mini golf in your life (and who doesn't?), head to Pirate's Cove.
There are two courses here, and you can golf both of them for $12.95.
When nothing but a laid back, unpretentious meal will do, head to The Shack...
... the lobster rolls here are second to none.
Everything at The Shack is homemade and fresh, and the ocean views don't hurt, either.
Of course, no one will blame you if you'd rather spend your time hanging out by the ocean.
