It may surprise you to learn that Maine has a longer coastline than California. The 3,478 miles of beauty include impressive rocky cliffs and beautiful sandy beaches. While there are many popular spots along Maine's beautiful coast, there are quite a few beaches that offer plenty of peace and quiet. In fact, if you know where to look, there are a handful of hidden beaches that are serene and peaceful year-round. Among those beaches is one that will have you feeling as though you've traveled to the Caribbean, and is truly one of the most beautiful beaches in Maine!
Make your way to The Wells Reserve at Laudholm and the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve to experience this small slice of Maine heaven.
A visit to Laudholm Beach in Wells is magical from the moment you arrive. You'll quickly discover that just getting to the beach is part of the adventure.
Our favorite route is the Knight Trail which leads to the Barrier Beach Trail. Or, you can choose to take the Barrier Beach Trail the whole way. Both are about a half-mile in length.
The walk begins with this incredible view of Mount Agamenticus towering behind vast grasslands.
Soon you'll be making your way through an Aspen grove and an old apple orchard.
There are a few boardwalks that help make this a fairly accessible walk.
Eventually, you'll arrive at a small dike leading to the Drakes Island gate. From there, it's straight on until you reach the beach!
Most beaches in Maine have a very specific appeal and Laudholm Beach is no different. The boardwalk reveals a stunning, sandy beach that also has rocky coastal areas. You'll be amazed by how blue the water is.
Take off your shoes and feel the warm sand beneath your feet as you walk along this peaceful beach.
You'll feel transported to the Caribbean Islands as you walk along the prettiest Maine beach. Parts of this beach feel pristine and untouched.
Be sure to take your time to explore the beach for seashells, scallops, clams, crabs, and other coastal treasures. Relax and inhale the salty air as you listen to the peaceful waves.
The slope of the beach is very gentle, making it easy for children and pets to play along the coastline and wade into the water, which is truly the clearest water in Maine. Bonus points for visiting in the fall when the foliage along the coast turns brilliant shades of red and orange.
You’ll find it hard to leave such a pristine stretch of beach. It’s hard to believe that such coastal beauty can still feel so remote.
Remember not to displace anything living, and adhere to the principles of "Leave No Trace" - meaning, please don't leave any trash or non-natural items on the beach.
You'll find many scenes of simplistic beauty all along this quiet coastline.
And depending on the time of year you visit, as well as the time of day, you may get lucky and have this whole beach to yourself!
