Everyone Always Goes to Ogunquit’s Main Beach in Maine: Go Here Instead
If you're looking to escape the bustle of Ogunquit's busiest beach, this hidden coastal gem delivers natural beauty, calmer shores, and a more laid-back vibe.
Ogunquit, Maine is my family’s happy place. Each year we try to make the trip into town, and on the rare occasions that this doesn’t happen, I always feel like my summer is missing something. The best part of a vacation to Ogunquit is always the beach, and my favorite place to spread out a blanket isn’t the most obvious choice. While most people flock to busy Main Beach, you can often find us camped out at another local spot. Located just up the road, Ogunquit’s peaceful Footbridge Beach is one of the best hidden beaches in Maine.
Why Ogunquit’s Main Beach Gets So Crowded
Now don’t get me wrong, I also love Main Beach and have spent lots of time sunbathing on its miles of sandy shores. The beach is situated right in town, close to Ogunquit’s many hotels, restaurants, and shops. While this location is convenient, it also draws lots of tourists. Also, the parking lot tends to fill up quickly, especially on prime beach days. When I want to beat the crowds, I head to Footbridge, one of my favorite beaches in Maine.
The Beach You Should Visit Instead
Serene, Footbridge Beach is located about a mile up the road from Main Beach, close to the border of Wells. While just as scenic (if not more), Footbridge offers a quiet, relaxing alternative to Ogunquit's Main Beach. While you won’t find shops and restaurants along its shores, you can enjoy leisurely walks, spectacular sunrises, and even the occasional seal sighting.
What to Expect When You Visit Footbridge Beach
Footbridge Beach is just a short walk or bike ride for those staying in the northern part of Ogunquit. There is also metered parking in the adjacent lot. During the summer months, you can opt to take the Ogunquit Trolley to and from the beach.
Once you arrive at the parking lot, just take a short stroll across the lovely wooden footbridge, and you will be greeted by sweeping ocean views and the soothing sound of the sea. Footbridge is a wonderful place to swim, sunbathe, or beachcomb. The beach is equipped with restrooms, and lifeguards are on duty during the summer daytime hours. Be sure to pack your own drinks and food.
If you want to take a break from the sand, there are plenty of other recreational activities to keep you busy. Many people fish from the footbridge, and others enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing in the Ogunquit River, which is located right next to the parking lot. The shallow waters here also make it a popular place for swimming.
Tips for Visiting This Hidden Gem
Footbridge Beach is open year-round from dawn to dusk. Please note that smoking is prohibited and dogs are not allowed on the beach from April 1 through September 8. Also, be aware that Footbridge Beach is a nesting spot for endangered piping plovers. Do not disturb the nests that are marked off in restricted areas.
Is It Worth Skipping Ogunquit's Main Beach?
Each beach in Ogunquit offers a different experience. If you are looking for a calm and peaceful day at the shore, go to Footbridge, but if you prefer a more lively beach experience, head to Main Beach. I personally like to spend a bit of time at both places when time allows. You can find more information about all of Ogunquit's beaches at the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce website. While you are in town, you should also sample some of the fantastic local cuisine. My family’s must-hit spots for seafood are Barnacle Billy's and the Ogunquit Lobster Pound Restaurant. And if you are looking to spend a few days in Ogunquit, I highly recommend staying at the Sea Rose Suites.
