26 Essential Idaho Experiences to Plan for 2026
Whether you're a foodie, nature lover, or thrill seeker, the Gem State is for you.

I love the excitement of a bucket list—it's the ultimate excuse to try something new. With each new year, I like to create a list of things I want to accomplish, or rather, experience for myself. The calendar year may be well over halfway through, but this list contains 26 adventures, attractions, and places to visit in Idaho that you can still experience in 2026.
Hopefully, my list of the best things to do in Idaho in 2026 will inspire you to create your own (or you can use mine!) Let’s fall in love with Idaho all over again.
1. Drive Around Craters of the Moon - Carey

The scenic drive around Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is only 7 miles long, but it takes you through the heart of the lava flows and to bucket-list-worthy hiking trails. I hope to visit in the late spring when the wildflowers are in full bloom.
2. Stargaze at City of Rocks National Reserve - Cassia County

City of Rocks National Reserve is one of the newest International Dark Sky Parks in Idaho and is an outdoor lover’s paradise. During the day, you can hike and climb the unique rock formations, and at night, you can sleep right next to boulders and witness the most incredible star show above you.
3. Go Tubing at Bogus Basin - Boise

North of Boise is the popular Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area and Ski Resort, where you can strap on a pair of skis and soar down the slopes. But there's nothing quite like bundling up and squealing for joy as you race down the impressive 800-foot-long snow tubing hill. Plus, a conveyor belt easily transports all riders back to the top to ensure everyone enjoys multiple rides.
4. View Shoshone Falls - Twin Falls

Shoshone Falls is one of the most well-known waterfalls in Idaho. While it's majestic all year long, there is nothing quite like the spring when the snowmelt from Idaho’s Rocky Mountains makes these falls truly roar. It's one of the best natural attractions to visit in 2026.
5. Eat Steak at Pioneer Saloon - Ketchum
Ketchum’s Pioneer Saloon is a historic steakhouse with an Old West-style vibe. This Idaho restaurant has earned quite a reputation across the state, and many people walk through its doors to try the prime rib and the Jim Spud—a baked potato with Teriyaki beef, loads of toppings, and cheese. Arrive hungry because the portions here are huge.
6. Tour the Old Idaho Penitentiary - Boise

The Old Idaho Penitentiary is one of the few territorial prisons open to the public today. This incredible building was built in 1870 and has quite a history filled with escapes, scandals, and even hauntings. In 2026, I hope to take a guided tour of this historic Boise destination (for only $2!) to learn more about its history.
7. Stay in a Potato - Boise
There are some truly unique Airbnbs in Idaho, but one that I cannot wait to visit is the Big Idaho Potato Hotel. True Idaho style, this vacation rental is a tiny home located inside a six-ton potato sitting on 400 acres of farmland south of Boise. This is the perfect destination for an overnight getaway in the Gem State.
8. Enjoy Views of Mesa Falls - Ashton

Mesa Falls is one of the most overlooked natural wonders in Idaho and is often overshadowed by some of the more popular waterfalls in the state. After a short hike, you can relax and enjoy the scenery from the viewing platforms—it's one of the best day trips in Idaho.
9. Attend Trailing of the Sheep Festival - Ketchum

I have yet to attend Trailing of the Sheep—one of the best festivals in Idaho—but I’m planning to mark it off my bucket list in 2026. This festival honors the long-time tradition of moving sheep (also known as trailing) through the Wood River Valley. This annual event will take place Oct. 7 through Oct. 11, 2026, featuring many activities and the Big Sheep Parade, where more than 1,500 sheep walk down Ketchum’s Main Street.
10. Explore Lava Hot Springs - Southern Idaho

Lava Hot Springs is one of the most well-known hot springs resorts in southern Idaho. No matter the time of the year, you’ll find hot pools ranging in temperatures from 102 degrees to 112 degrees Fahrenheit, and each one is beckoning you for a long soak. Plus, this hot springs resort is tucked up next to the mountains, offering some pretty majestic views as you unwind and relax.
11. Explore Small Towns - Stanley

For outdoor lovers, Stanley is a town you cannot miss. This Idaho destination is home to countless activities for people of all ages and some pretty charming places to stay. You can river raft, fish, and hike in the summer months or snowshoe and snowmobile in the winter. You’ll never be bored here.
12. See the Camas Lily Bloom - Fairfield

Tucked away near the small town of Fairfield is one of the most gorgeous wildflower blooms — the Camas Lily Bloom at the Camas Prairie-Centennial Marsh Wildlife Management Area. From late May to early June, you’ll see acres of land covered in purple flowers. Who knows, you may even spot some wildlife, too. Even if you've missed the peak blooms, this sight is worth seeing.
13. Stay at Black Swan Inn - Pocatello
Near downtown Pocatello, the Black Swan Inn is one of the best themed bed and breakfasts in Idaho. At this family-owned hotel, you’ll find more than a dozen themed suites that are perfect for a romantic getaway. From a sea cave suite to a jungle-themed room, you will feel like you’ve traveled around the world after just a single night. After settling in, head into town for a drink.
13. Visit Redfish Lake - Stanley

Idaho has some of the most breathtaking lakes, particularly its alpine lakes. While there are many lakes you can hike or drive to, my favorite is Redfish Lake near Stanley. This body of water is surrounded by the Sawtooth Mountains, easily accessible, and absolutely beautiful. It’s one of my favorite places for a day at the lake and is on my list for 2026.
14. Explore Bruneau Dunes State Park - Bruneau

Bruneau Dunes State Park is one of the most unique state parks in Idaho. Here, you’ll find some bucket-list-worthy activities like winter camping and exploring the tallest free-standing dune in North America. But one activity I can’t wait to do in 2026 is rent a sandboard and soar down the dunes. There aren't too many places in Idaho where you can enjoy this thrilling experience.
15. Get Pumpkins at U-Pick RedBarn - Idaho Falls

U-Pick Red Barn is one of the best pumpkin patches in southeastern Idaho. This autumn destination in Idaho Falls has something for everyone, from train rides and pumpkin cannons to slides and delicious fall food. Of course, you’ll find me in the large pumpkin patch where I’ll be trying to decide between pumpkins of all sizes and shapes to take home.
16. Visit the North Pole - Lake Coeur d’Alene

One of my favorite Christmas events in Idaho is the Journey to the North Pole, offered by Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises. During this unforgettable activity, you'll cruise around and witness more than 250 holiday light displays and millions of lights. Your ride will take you to the North Pole, where you’ll find Santa, who may just read his Naughty or Nice List—you'll want to listen closely to see if the children accompanying you are on the nice list.
17. Attend a Yacht Rock Concert - Boise
You will have a multi-sensory musical experience when you attend Sailing: Soft Rock Hits of the 70s and 80s by the Boise Philharmonic. On May 2 and 3, 2026, enjoy the breezy, laid-back sounds of "Yacht Rock" bands Hall & Oates, Christopher Cross, Fleetwood Mac, and more as you've never heard before—in the form of classical accompaniment. It's the perfect date night activity.
18. Stay in a Flower Pot - Burley
Have you ever wanted to sleep in a flower pot? It may seem strange, but it’s possible when you book a stay at this flower pot Airbnb in Burley. This unique vacation rental can sleep up to four guests and offers many amenities that will make you feel right at home. Its extraordinary design will have you standing outside and simply admiring, or enjoying the views from the hot tub.
19. Hike Table Rock Trail - Boise

There are some exceptional trails near Boise, but one hike in Treasure Valley at the top of my list is the Table Rock Trail. This hike is just shy of four miles, but despite the short distance, you'll want to come prepared—there are some steep inclines you must tackle. But the breathtaking views of Boise are worth every step. It's easily one of the best hikes in Idaho.
20. Enjoy Views at Elevation 486 - Twin Falls

I love to visit restaurants with exceptional views, and there’s no place quite like Elevation 486 in Twin Falls. This restaurant sits right on the south rim of the Snake River Canyon, and while the food is quite fantastic, the views are breathtaking. Elevation 486 offers a full dining experience that I recommend everyone visit at least once.
21. Fish at Henry’s Fork of Snake River - Southeastern Idaho

I’ve grown up fishing and have fished in bodies of water large and small, but I can’t wait to try my luck at the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River. Here, you can try fishing from a boat, along the shore, or even fly fishing. Just keep an eye out for much larger animals—it isn’t uncommon to spot a bear or moose in this body of water.
22. Search for Bear Lake Monster - St. Charles

Bear Lake is one of the best year-round vacation spots in Idaho. It is beautiful here—it's known as the Caribbean of the Rockies after all. And while you can camp, fish, swim, hike, relax on the beach, and so much more, I suggest you spend some time searching for the Bear Lake Monster. This is one of the most fascinating legends in both Idaho and Utah.
23. Stay at Sun Valley Resort - Sun Valley

In my opinion, Sun Valley is one of the most beautiful destinations in Idaho, and a visit to the Sun Valley Resort is an absolute must. Any time of the year, you'll find activities to keep you busy, from skiing and snowboarding in the winter to hiking and mountain biking in the summer. I particularly love to visit in the autumn months, as the area is surrounded by fall foliage and the crowds are much smaller.
24. Attend Winter Spirit - Lewiston
One of my favorite holiday events in Idaho is found in Lewiston at Locomotive Park. Each December, this historic park is adorned with thousands of holiday lights, including colorful tunnels and trees, and a brightly lit train. After you walk around the park, you can also stand by the large fireplace and warm up. If you are lucky, you may even see Santa visiting as well. 2026 dates are TBD.
25. Hike to Goldbug Hot Springs - Salmon
If you want to soak in primitive hot springs in Idaho, there’s no place quite like Goldbug Hot Springs. But to reach them, you'll need to lace up your hiking boots and tackle a challenging 3.5-mile hike. Goldbug Hot Springs is near the small town of Salmon, a great small town to visit in 2026.
26. Attend the Idaho Dog Sled Challenge - McCall
One of the best winter activities in Idaho has to be witnessing the annual dog sled races. From January 29 to February 6, 2026, you can watch four-legged competitors win big in Spirit Unleashed!—a qualifying event for the famous Iditarod race in Alaska. It's a super exciting (and very adorable) way to get in touch with local tradition.
