13 Ways Wisconsin Has Quietly Become The Coolest State In America
Knowing and loving Wisconsin always feels a bit like having insider information. People know us for beer and cheese and sports, but we often get dismissed as flyover country. But those of us that live here know how many truly wonderful things come together and add up to make Wisconsin truly one of the best places in the country. While other folks sleep on Wisconsin and miss out on all we have to offer, here are a few reasons we are the coolest state in America:
1. We're full of stunning natural beauty.
No matter where you are in the state, there's gorgeous vistas, amazing views and beautiful spots to enjoy. From the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior to the bluffs of the Mississippi River and everywhere in between, the natural beauty of Wisconsin cannot be overstated.
2. Whatever you love — we've got a festival for that.
From the ethnic festivals on Milwaukee's lakefront to the small town celebrations of local products, Wisconsin is a state that loves to throw a party. We live life to the fullest and we celebrate the things that make us unique.
3. Our summers are amazing...
It says a lot when folks from multiple other states spend their summers vacationing in Wisconsin. We pack so much amazing stuff into our few short warm months. Heading up north is practically law here in Wisconsin and this picture illustrates perfectly why — the peace and beauty of summer in Wisconsin are second to none.
4. ...but we can have a lot of fun in winter, too.
We don't shut down for the winter, we embrace it. When the snow starts to fly, we have a whole new set of outdoor activities to keep us busy.
5. Even if the outdoors isn't your thing, there's plenty to do indoors, as well.
Even outside of our biggest cities, there are amazing museums to be found across the state. And we have some amazing small artist communities, theaters and more to keep you entertained indoors.
6. We've got a lot of personality...
We love a quirky attraction here in Wisconsin. Whether it's marveling at all things kitsch at House on the Rock.
7. ...and a lot of history.
Good, bad, and otherwise, we've managed to pack quite a bit of history into our 170 or so years of statehood.
8. Our park system is second-to-none.
We're pioneers in rails-to-trails and we have a truly massive amount of protected lands to enjoy. With our unique geographic history, you can feel like you're traveling to a different planet just by visiting a new park.
9. Wisconsin is a foodie's dream.
We have access to so much fresh food here and we've attracted some amazing chefs that utilize our proximity to so many farms to produce some of the freshest, most delicious food around. The number of James Beard Award nominations is a testament to the great food being made here.
10. We're a bit off the wall...
We throw pumpkins and rubber chickens, race beds, and bowl with frozen turkeys. We plunge into the icy waters on New Years and throw cow chips. We're definitely a little odd, but we wouldn't have it any other way.
11. ...as well as full of tradition.
We Jump around and own our professional football team. We eat cream puffs at the State Fair and head up north on summer weekends. We all have our traditions and those run deep here in Wisconsin.
12. We love the arts.
We already mentioned the museums, but we also have a wide array of indoor and outdoor music venues, stages, and theaters. We sing and dance to honor our heritage and protect our stunning opera houses and theaters.
13. Wisconsinites are some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet.
We say hi when we pass on the street, mow or shovel our neighbors' yards, help push cars when they're stuck, and come together as a community when help is needed. Wisconsin is great because of the people here who make it that way.
