Sometimes, there’s treasure hiding in plain sight. When I was a kid, I passed the Pine River more times than I can remember. The meandering river was just a couple miles down the valley from my grandparent’s Richland County farm, and while I marveled at how it overflowed its banks during spring flooding, I never considered this little river to be one of Wisconsin’s natural wonders. I recently paddled this river, as found it was just that – it’s a ticket into the beauty of the Driftless Area and it’s lined with ancient sandstone bluffs. I can’t believe it took me so long to experience this place – here’s why the Pine River is a unique destination for kayaking in Wisconsin.
