One Of The Most Haunted Cemeteries In Wisconsin Is Also The Most Beautiful
When you’re driving in rural Wisconsin, you’ll see them, just off to the side of the road. Sometimes the church is long gone. Sometimes they are overgrown places filled with weeds. And sometimes, it seems like everyone has just plain forgotten. These places are Wisconsin’s rural cemeteries. If you pull over to take a closer look at the old carved headstones and old oak trees, you might find them more beautiful than you expect. But be warned, you might also get a little more than you bargained for. Such is the case with Walnut Grove Cemetery, a creepy Wisconsin cemetery.
The cemetery is located in Glenbeulah, a very old town in Sheboygan County that’s close to the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The village has fewer than 500 people, and it was named named for its location in a forest glen, and in honor of Beulah, the mother of a railroad contractor.
Early residents worked in long-gone enterprises that included a factory and a grist mill. Many early residents found their final resting place in a little cemetery in the woods.
The cemetery has some interesting old gravestones, and it’s surrounded by big, old trees. The graves are very old, and many are showing their age.
It’s still a tranquil and beautiful spot, although it does have a dark reputation. As legend goes, a man once hung himself in this quiet place.
The man never found peace, and his ghost reportedly roams the cemetery. Numerous unexplained sightings have been reported at night.
If you don’t want to run into the ghost, be sure not to visit this place after midnight – that’s when he appears. Other strange occurrences have been reported here, as well, including a gravestone that glows in the dark and a ghostly pair of shoes that appears and then abruptly vanishes.
If you’re brave enough to visit this creepy Wisconsin cemetery, you’ll need to go in on foot, via a footpath. Learn more about the trails in the area on the Kettle Moraine AllTrails.
