Welcome to Helen’s Restaurant, a local establishment in Richmond, Virginia that has been welcoming both locals and visitors for decades. The minute you step inside, you’ll immediately feel welcomed.
Helen’s opened its doors in 1935, but the building itself dates back to 1912 when it served as a pharmacy known as Fletcher’s. By 1927, a couple decided to take over the space and open up a restaurant while they lived upstairs.
Their daughter, Helen, was considered the savviest for business and she took over her parents’ business on her 21st birthday. Under Helen’s watch, the restaurant continued to blossom and was known for its great beer and juke box selection.
After Helen passed away, her brother took over the business and named it after his sister. Today, the eatery is run by another loving couple dedicated to preserving the history of this lovable neighborhood joint.
You’ll find a little bit of everything on the menu, although the food has a distinctive Southern-style flair. One of the most popular orders is the classic shrimp and grits, served up in generous portions.
Helen’s has also become a popular spot for weekend brunch. If you visit during this time, be sure to try out the eggs Benedict!
No matter what meal you choose to eat at Helen’s, you’re sure to be captivated by the sense of history and character infused in the walls of this local eatery.
