Visit the Hidden Gem Small Town Right Next Door to Hungry Mother State Park
With a walkable main street, beautiful architecture, and plenty of Appalachian charm, Marion is the perfect home base for all your state park adventures.
Hungry Mother State Park is certainly underrated. Compared to some other Virginia parks, it flies under the radar despite its stunning mountain views, haunting lore, and top-notch hiking trails. But there's another reason to venture to this park: Marion is right next door. This small town near Hungry Mother State Park is an ideal home base for your outdoor adventures, but I think you'll want to spend just as much time sightseeing in Marion as you will hiking through Virginia's highlands.
Why This Town is the Perfect Base for Hungry Mother State Park
Marion is just 10 minutes away from Hungry Mother State Park, nestled within the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia. It couldn't be more convenient as a place to explore in between trips to the park. And in a way, the town feels like an extension of the park. You won't lose sight of those beautiful mountain views or authentic Appalachian spirit. And, from a practical standpoint, if you're staying in Marion, you'll be able to zip to and from the park in no time. This is perfect for early birds who want to avoid the crowds but aren't necessarily looking to camp inside the park.
What to Do in Marion
Your time in Marion shouldn't be rushed. It's not a big place; the population is just under 6,000. But every building and historic landmark has a story to tell. One of the best ways to get to know Marion is by walking through its historic downtown. Start your day at Better Coffee Co., a locally-owned coffee shop with delicious brews and drinks you'd expect from a much, much bigger city. It's got classic drip coffee and espresso drinks, but the signature beverage here is a nitro cold brew. (Try the Maple Vanilla Chai for a sweet start to your day!)
Then spend a little while checking out the Lincoln Theatre, which might be the most famous spot in town. It's a restored 1920s movie palace that's still in operation today, hosting live performances, community events, and concerts. Perhaps one of the most unique things about the theatre is its design. It's one of the last Mayan-revival-style theatres in the world. When you're ready for a bite to eat, the Wooden Pickle comes highly recommended, famous for its comfort food.
Where to Stay Nearby
Stay near Hungry Mother State Park at the historic General Francis Marion Hotel. General Marion, also the inspiration behind the town's name, was famous for his unconventional fighting style during the American Revolution, earning him the name "Swamp Fox." The hotel is one of those classic, elegant places that retains the charm of the 1920s. And yes, it's probably haunted. A few guests have reported hearing knocking, mysterious piano music playing, and flickering lights.
For something a bit woodsier and less paranormal, Hungry Mother Island is a lovely three-bedroom, two-bathroom cabin that makes you feel like you're staying in the park. It can accommodate up to six guests comfortably, and it's bordered by the park, trails, and a few different wilderness areas. Hungry Mother Creek winds through the property, too, giving guests access to excellent mountain-stream fishing. The interior is comfortable, updated, and will feel like your home away from home for your park and small-town adventures. One recent reviewer shared that it was his fourth time staying there, which, in my opinion, says everything!

The park's most popular trails, like Molly's Knob Trail or Clyburn Hollow Trail, might be best to begin early before parking fills up.
