The 5 Best Outdoorsy Towns to Explore in Virginia
If you love getting outside, you'll be in excellent company in any of these adventure-filled small towns.
Some small towns are known for their historic landmarks; others for their charm. But almost every small town in Virginia is blessed with a gorgeous natural backdrop, whether that means waterfront, mountains, or rolling green hills. But the best outdoorsy towns in Virginia go a step further—they offer access to hiking trails, paddling, and in some cases, even caving. So the next time the weather calls for being outside, be sure to add one of these places to your radar.
1. Pearisburg
It's one of the best trail towns in Virginia, but few people outside of the region know about it. Tucked away in the foothills of the Pearis Mountains in Giles County, this little hub has been affectionately named "Virginia's Mountain Playground." It's also a popular stop along the famed Appalachian Trail, with many of its businesses geared toward thru-hikers and other weary travelers looking to recharge and refuel.
Visiting here means you'll have your pick of beautiful mountain trails to enjoy, plus opportunities to embark on the New River. But the signature outdoor experience is hiking to Angels Rest, a challenging 4-mile out-and-back trek along the Appalachian Trail that leads to a stunning panoramic overlook of the valley below.
2. Monterey
Monterey is typically on the map for its annual Maple Festival, which takes place in the early spring and celebrates the maple harvest. But visit any time of year, and you'll find yourself surrounded by outdoor adventures. For fly fishers, this little corner of the Virginia Highlands is nothing short of heavenly. Trout-filled waterways like the Jackson River promise a near-perfect day of fishing, although that's just the beginning. Other activities include stargazing, bike riding, hiking, and stargazing—thanks to the low light pollution, you'll have a crystal-clear view of the night sky. Consider a few nights at the Virginia Backcountry Cabins for an unforgettable, off-the-grid stay.
3. Front Royal
Front Royal is known as the gateway to Shenandoah National Park. It's the beginning of Skyline Drive, the scenic route that winds through the park, and a great home base for all of your outdoor adventures. But you don't need to leave town to enjoy being outside. Front Royal is home to some stunning local parks, botanical gardens, and the lovely Happy Creek Arboretum. For something really special, head to Skyline Caverns, which offers one-hour tours of the otherworldly caves. Then recount all of your adventures at Spelunkers, famous for its Cavern Burgers and frozen custard.
4. Scottsville
There aren't many places where you can walk from the heart of downtown to a boat launch within minutes, but Scottsville is one of them. This lovely town is nestled on the banks of the James River, just a short drive from Charlottesville. Visiting here means you simply have to spend some quality time on the river, whether that's a guided boat tour or your own paddling adventure. When you're ready to stretch your legs, visit the Van Clief Nature Area, a lovely preserve filled with nature trails and opportunities for spotting wildlife.
5. Farmville

Another beautiful small town in central Virginia, Farmville is just next door to an incredible feat of engineering known as High Bridge Trail. The former railway is 31 miles long and offers hiking, biking, and horseback riding, but the most exciting part spans the Appomattox River just outside of town, taking visitors 125 feet above the water. Not a huge fan of heights? Not to worry; you can enjoy some calmer paddling adventures instead.
So, which of these small towns in Virginia for nature lovers will you explore first? As you can see, the Old Dominion is filled with places that celebrate being outside, whatever that may mean to you.
