What to Do in Marlinton
Before venturing to the park, spend a little time in downtown Marlinton. If you're in search of some caffeine, head to Dirtbean, which might just be the perfect introduction to the town's personality. It's part coffee shop, part bike shop. The motto of the cafe is "life is an adventure best fueled by good food, great coffee, and an open trail." Folks rave about the egg scramble and the chai lattes, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu here.
For a little sightseeing, check out the Pocahontas County Opera House, a restored theatre that was originally built in 1910 and still operates today. Each year, the opera house hosts a highly popular performance series, which includes a dozen or so shows ranging from bluegrass to jazz and musical theater. What sets this place apart is its intimate setting—there are just 250 seats—as well as the ample light that pours in from 32 windows. Stay up to date on this year's event calendar so that you can plan your visit around a show.
Lastly, you'll find Marlinton to be wonderfully walkable. The downtown area is compact, so it's easy to get from shops to historic sites and restaurants without needing to get in your car. And speaking of walking, the town is positioned right along the Greenbrier River Trail, giving you direct access to 78 miles of stunning West Virginia views.
