One Of The Most Beautiful Lighthouses In The U.S. Is 2,000 Miles From The Sea

This signature Minnesota landmark is anchored on the craggy coast of Lake Superior. Though it’s one of the nation’s most stunning lighthouses, it’s actually situated a full 2,000 miles from the sea. Split Rock Lighthouse has been guiding freighters carrying freshly mined coal across the lake’s dangerous waters since 1910.

In fact, Split Rock Lighthouse is one of the most photographed and visited spots in Minnesota. It was instrumental in supporting the 20th century’s booming ore trade and quickly became a state icon due to its graceful good looks and dramatic address at the top of a sheer rocky cliff. By the 1930s, more than 5,000 people per year were visiting the lighthouse.

Today, the lighthouse has been restored to its turn-of-the-century glamor and welcomes visitors from near and far. Guests can learn about the history of lake lighthouses and take in incredible views of the Lake Superior shoreline at the same time. The grounds are open from Nov. 1, 2018 to Feb. 28, 2019 this season. The lighthouse isn’t open for tours during the winter, but it does reopen to the public in the spring. Admission is free.
