The Oldest Hotel In Rhode Island, Graduate Providence, Is Also One Of The Most Haunted Places You’ll Ever Sleep

Graduate Providence, formerly known as the Biltmore Hotel, is a historic and allegedly haunted hotel with a sinister past.

Before it was the Graduate Providence, the hotel known as The Biltmore had earned quite a reputation since its 1922 opening. A state as old as Rhode Island is bound to have some ghost stories, and we certainly have plenty -- but this hotel has received national attention for its paranormal activity. And even if you don't believe in ghosts, the Biltmore Hotel Providence, now the Graduate Providence, has a haunted history that makes it a delightful place to stay. So, is the Biltmore Hotel Providence haunted? Let's find out!

Although this property was renovated and renamed in the spring of 2019, it was originally built in 1922.

The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Looking at this artsy, modern space with historic bones, you'd never guess it had a sinister history.

But the hotel that is now known as The Graduate Providence does have some dark roots.

To begin the Biltmore Hotel Providence history lesson, in 1918 Johan Leisse Weisskopf, a known Satanist, financed the hotel's construction.

Rumor has it that he wanted to use the space to educate the public about Satanism and its perks.

What followed were years of rumored animal sacrifices, weekly rituals, murders, and more.

In addition, the hotel was used as a speakeasy during Prohibition, with plenty of mobsters hanging out here (and plenty of unexplained murders as well).

Between the Satanic roots and the mobsters, it's really no wonder this place was named America's Most Haunted Hotel in 2000 by the American Hotel and Lodging Association

It seems as if the spirits of those tortured souls became trapped within its walls.

The paranormal encounters here are too numerous to name -- just ask any longtime employee or frequent hotel guest.

But whether or not those rumors are true, this is still a beautiful place to spend a vacation, enjoy a meal, or host a private event.

Graduate Providence pays homage to its history with its classically designed rooms and historic decor.

Ghosts or not, this local landmark is full of old-school charm.
