The 2.7-Mile Hiking Trail in Virginia That Is a Fall Foliage Wonderland
We're taking you on a tour of the Beaver Lake Trail, an easy 2.7-mile hike that will take just about an hour to complete.
Mountains get all the credit for stunning fall foliage. But you don't need to travel to higher altitudes to get your dose of fresh air and gorgeous autumn colors. This season, plan a visit to central Virginia's Pocahontas State Park and admire a full forest canopy of poplars, tulips, oaks, and more as they boast their most vibrant hues. We're taking you on a tour of the Beaver Lake Trail, an easy 2.7-mile hike that will take just about an hour to complete. But first, let's learn a little bit about this impressive park.
Pocahontas State Park was established by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1946 along Swift Creek in Chesterfield, not far from Richmond. Measuring just over 7,900 acres, it's the largest state park in Virginia. It's also a haven for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds: anglers, hikers, and campers alike.
It's nearly impossible to enjoy all that the park has to offer in a single afternoon, which is why many visitors opt to rent a cabin or camp overnight. There are four three-bedroom cabins available as well as one six-bedroom lodge. There are also four yurts available for rent in addition to a year-round campground with plenty of sites. Reservations are required for any overnight stay.
Of course, if you only have an hour or two to spare, the Beaver Lake Trail offers the perfect introduction. This well-maintained trail takes hikers on a tour of Beaver Lake, a 24-acre lake that makes for a wonderfully picturesque backdrop.
The trail will also take you through the woods, which is where you'll be completely immersed in fall foliage. Reviewers agree that it's a great hike for the whole family given that it isn't too strenuous. That being said, hikers should wear sturdy hiking boots and be aware of roots along the trail, which can be especially difficult to see when covered by fallen leaves. You'll also want to bring some bug spray if you're planning your visit during the summer.
Can't you just hear those leaves crunching under your feet? We can't wait to explore this fall-friendly state park this season.
Learn more about planning your visit to Pocahontas State Park when you visit the Virginia State Parks website. The park is open daily between 7:30 a.m. and dusk. There's a $10 admission/vehicle fee during weekends between April and October. Otherwise, the fee is $7. Be sure to check out our hiking essentials packing list before your adventure!
