This Arizona State Park Has a Charming Town Right Next Door — and Nobody Talks About It

Discover a charming small town near Kartchner Caverns State Park that’s perfect for your next getaway, with great stays and easy park access.

Kartchner Caverns State Park is often listed as having the “Best Cave in the USA.” Surprisingly, only about 150,000 people visit each year to tour the show caves and hike the trails. To put that into perspective, almost a million people come to nearby Bisbee and Tombstone, but most roadtrippers will leave Benson behind in their rearview mirrors. So, it’s easy to see why the small town near Kartchner Caverns State Park flies under the radar, even though it’s down the road from the park. Not only is this hidden gem town an ideal basecamp for Kartchner Caverns, but we also think it’s full of charm with cozy places to stay.

Just 9 miles outside of Benson sits Kartchner Caverns State Park. From the park, the drive along Highway 90 is an easy cruise with views of rolling hills and wide-open desert. For anyone traveling to Southern Arizona, the town is conveniently located less than 30 minutes from Tombstone and about 45 miles from Bisbee. As major tourist hubs, the hotels and amenities will cost you some extra coins. That’s where Benson, one of the best towns near Kartchner Caverns State Park, comes in as a budget-friendly option for RV nomads as well as roadtrippers.

With just over 5,300 residents, the vibe of the town is laid-back with a little bit of Old West culture and enough kitschy attractions to keep roadtrippers happy. Expect friendly folks, mom-and-pop restaurants, and charming shops, but there are also modern amenities and chain restaurants, too. Since it’s surrounded by the Whetstone Mountains, the state park, forests, and wilderness areas, there are lots of opportunities to hike and explore the rugged desert terrain.

What to Do in Benson

Although it has a low walkability score, Benson has pockets that are walkable. Start by picking up a brochure from the visitor center, housed inside the train depot, and get to know the town on a self-guided walking tour of the historic district. You’ll see the Benson Railroad Historic District, learn about the town’s railroad and Old West history, and stroll by early 20th-century buildings with storefronts that look frozen in time.

Aside from the state park (discussed below), roadtrippers will stop in to visit The Thing, the infamous roadside attraction in Arizona, known for its oddities. We’re talking aliens, dinosaurs, vintage cars, weird conspiracies, and the actual “Thing,” which you’ll need to see for yourself.

And the gift store has enough stuff to keep you browsing for hours. It’s the kind of road trip stop that you will never forget. Other places to visit include the Forever Home Donkey Rescue, where you can interact with rescued donkeys. And don’t miss touring the iconic Mescal Movie Set, where the movie Tombstone was filmed.

When you’re hungry, Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant is a local favorite for authentic Mexican food, or stop in at the Horseshoe Cafe, which has been serving mouthwatering comfort food since 1936. You can also grab food from chain restaurants, if that is what your heart desires, but don't forget to treat yourself to something sweet at Old Benson Ice Cream Stop. You really can’t go wrong.

Where to Stay Nearby

RV travelers, Benson boasts over 15 places to stay. Popular spots include Butterfield RV Resort, CT RV Resort, and Benson RV Estates, offering resort-style amenities, such as a pool, game room, clubhouse, hot tub, and plenty of activities. Additionally, for one flat rate, you can RV or tent camp at Kartchner Caverns State Park. All sites have full hookups (which is a plus) and include a picnic bench, fire ring, hose bib, and power post. If you want a more comfy experience, opt for one of the glamping cabins.

For even more comfort, you’ll find vacation rentals ranging from luxury multiple-bedroom homes to tiny homes to ranch houses, to cottages, and more, which is perfect for families traveling to the area. Wake up and pet donkeys, goats, and pigs when you stay at Ranchito Paraiso, an artsy one-bedroom farm retreat. Of course, some of your favorite budget-friendly chains are here too.

What to Know Before You Go

Touring Kartchner Caverns State Park is one of the main reasons to visit this small town in Arizona. The highlight of the two-hour tour is seeing the massive 58-foot Kubla Khan limestone formation inside the Throne Room. Past visitors are always left speechless by the stalactites and stalagmites inside the living cave, often describing it as “awe-inspiring.”  That’s especially true because photography is not allowed (except on photo tours), so when they lay eyes on the formations, many are seeing them for the first time.

Although the cave remains a comfy 70 degrees all year round, you’ll want to visit during the cooler months, spring or fall. That way, you can spend time hiking the trails after your tour. Plus, it’s less crowded in the shoulder season. Book your tour in advance and arrive about 30 minutes before your scheduled check-in time. No cameras are allowed, so be prepared to be fully engaged in the experience. Keep in mind that there is an entrance fee for the park, but it’s waived if you book a cave tour or camp overnight. That’s a win!

All in all, Benson might not get the same attention as Bisbee or Tombstone, but the town has its own character and charm. As the gateway to Arizona’s best caves, it makes sense to extend your time in the area with an overnight stay. There will be plenty to keep you and your family busy for a couple of days. And if you want to find more fun things to do in Southern Arizona, the Visit Arizona website covers everything from restaurants to attractions to hotels, and more.
