A Once Abandoned Hotel In Texas, Baker Hotel Is One Of The Most Haunted Places In The State
The Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas, once a luxurious destination, is now a haunted landmark undergoing a $65-million renovation set to reopen in 2026.
The little city of Mineral Wells has a population of about 15,000 residents. It's located approximately 50 miles west of Fort Worth, and when you visit it, one of the most striking things about this place is the single building that towers over the town. Even though the Baker Hotel opened just weeks after the famed 1929 stock market crash, it actually saw plenty of business throughout the 1930s. It thrived in the 1940s after a military base opened not far from the hotel.
Celebrities like Helen Keller, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, and even Bonnie and Clyde are said to have stayed at the Baker Hotel during its heyday.
Back then, this 450-room hotel was the height of luxury.
Why was the Baker Hotel abandoned?
With advances in modern medicine, interest in the health spa aspect of the Baker Hotel waned. The hotel struggled throughout the 1960s, and closed for a couple of years in the middle of the decade before finally closing for good in 1972.
It's hard to believe, but the Baker Hotel was abandoned.
There were always groups interested in purchasing the hotel to fix up the historic property, but, of course, that hinged on finding interested investors. The hotel has now gone on more than five decades empty.
Many abandoned places quickly develop rumors of hauntings, and the Baker Hotel is haunted, if you believe the rumors.
There are supposedly dozens of spirits who choose to stick around the area.
Some people even claim the ghosts of Bonnie and Clyde still occupy one of the rooms here, and that they're having a great time spending their stolen money even after death.
The most famous spirit that resides in this haunted hotel in Texas, though, is a lady in white who is associated with the seventh floor.
People believe she was Baker's mistress, who allegedly lived in the hotel and ended her life by jumping from the building. Some of these claims were made even when the hotel was still open for operations.
The hotel was originally expected to open in the fall of 2024.
However, renovations have taken longer than expected.
Several delays have been announced over the years.
The Baker Hotel is now set to open in spring 2026.
