Discover the Wisconsin Small Town That Looks Like a Hallmark Movie Set

Hallmark movies often feature a young woman searching for something in her life. Visiting a small town from the big city and ready for a new adventure, the heroine is thrown off course by a town she never expected. That cliché has never meant much to me until I realized I had my own version of those places. Since I first set foot in Spring Green at the age of 18, the town has been a North Star for me, a hallmark of a quintessential Midwestern small town. With its historic downtown, local charm, and incredible sights like Taliesin, I can easily imagine the main characters finding their way or being whisked into a new journey right in the heart of Spring Green.

The magic of this town is that once you've been there, you can never forget it. Although the architecture is similar to that of other 19th and 20th-century Midwestern downtowns, don't let that fool you. There you'll uncover special nooks and crannies like the ever-so-cozy Arcadia Books, coffee specialties a rock's throw away at Convivio, or dine at the White School collective, fittingly housed in a 1877 schoolhouse. Along the way, you'll meet some of the kindest people who encapsulate the notion of Midwestern hospitality. But you'll also find that there's even more to this place—an almost unspoken creative energy that flows through it.

Many visitors discover that essence because of Taliesin, the primary home and studio of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The compound is a sterling example of Wright's Prairie style, with a unique aesthetic that makes it look straight out of a Hollywood backlot. It is surrounded by hundreds of acres of nature, the kind of nature one could imagine a goofy Spring Green pun about from the Hallmark writers. The serenity of Taliesin's surroundings makes it clear why Wright chose this place to spend much of his life. It's a place one might only experience in a dream—or a Hallmark Channel fantasy.

For me, however, the crown jewel of Spring Green is the American Players Theatre (APT). This classic theater taught me an important lesson that most Hallmark movie heroines learn: The big city isn't the be-all and end-all. Between the indoor space, the Touchstone, and the outdoor Hill Theatre, I've seen some of the best theater I've ever seen here. Chatting with friends while meandering the pathways up the hill, enjoying a picnic in the woods before a show, or running off to grab cheese curds at intermission and befriending other audience members—APT captures so much of what I love about Spring Green in one fell swoop.

You see, the thing about Hallmark movies is that you often can't find the exact town they depict anywhere else. I could easily say the same about Spring Green. It has long been my muse. A breath of fresh air. A respite in an all too busy world. Spring Green isn't just a town you can visit; it invites you in to stay awhile—the kind of place you often only find in the movies.
