Charming small towns abound in West Virginia. Here are twelve incredible West Virginia small towns to visit that are worth your attention this year, one for each calendar month. Have you visited them all?
1. Charleston
Start the year (sometime in January) with a stop in Charleston. Despite being West Virginia's largest city, it still qualifies as a small town by the nation's standards! Plus, the free West Virginia State Museum at the Capitol Complex will help orient you to all the other great small towns you'll be visiting in months to come.
2. Snowshoe
In February, swing through Snowshoe, West Virginia. Ski if you like; otherwise, feel free to stroll the wintery streets with a steaming cup of hot cocoa or soak in the heated outdoor pool if that's more your style.
3. Harpers Ferry
In March, spring will have sprung in Harpers Ferry... meaning you may see it under a blanket of snow OR boasting ephemeral flowers! Either way, it's a great time to explore this National Historic Park.
4. Point Pleasant
In April, swing through Point Pleasant. Grab a picture with the Mothman statue. Stroll along the Ohio Riverwalk. Grab a bite to eat.
5. Pineville
Head to Wyoming County in May, to the county seat of Pineville. Enjoy kayaking, rock formations, hiking, ATV riding, shopping, and more.
6. Buckhannon
The charming small town of Buckhannon in Upshur County boasts one of the best main street shopping districts in the whole state. Boutique shops, produce markets, and so much more!
7. Nitro
Looking for a patriotic town to spend some time in during July? Look no further than Nitro, West Virginia, where you'll find free museums, living memorial parks, and more.
8. Williamson
Take some time in August to explore Williamson. See one of the nation's rare buildings made completely of coal. Ride the Hatfield-McCoy trail. Stay at the Mountaineer Hotel.
9. Cass
In September, catch the earliest of the fall colors in Cass. This town-turned-state-park is one of the cutest, most historic little communities to be found in West Virginia.
10. Ansted
The New River Gorge bursts into flame (thanks to fall foliage!) in October, and Hawks Nest State Park (aerial tram and all) in Ansted is a great spot for a front row seat for the annual autumnal show.
11. Bramwell
In November, take a trip to the Home of Millionaires! Enjoy strolling historic streets lined with dozens of massive mansions, and don't miss the chance to grab a treat from The Corner Shop Cafe and Soda Fountain.
12. Bluefield
There's no better time to visit Bluefield, West Virginia than December, when this Official Christmas City transforms into a magical wonderland of lights.
