West Virginia's largest city is also its capital: Charleston. Some of us live here in this beautiful river city. Some of us just pass through it from time to time. Either way, here's a helpful list of some fun things to do next time you find yourself in Charleston, West Virginia.
1. Photograph the West Virginia state capitol building.
Did you know it was designed by the same architect that designed the nation's supreme court building? That's why they look so similar.
2. Tour the West Virginia State Museum.
The impressive collection in this admission-free museum adjacent to the capitol building is one of the best ways to explore West Virginia from top to bottom - and from ancient times to modern.
3. Stroll along Haddad Riverfront Park.
This is a beautiful walk near the capitol complex no matter what the time of year, plus there always seems to be something extra to enjoy - live music, vendors, fireworks... you never know what you'll come across!
4. Explore the shops lining Capitol Street.
Don't miss Taylor Books or Mortar Man or any other of the fun attractions lining this unique, historic street.
5. Grab lunch at Capitol Market.
There's plenty to choose from, including fresh groceries and prepared foods, at this massive indoor-outdoor market.
6. Enjoy all the multi-faceted attractions housed in the Clay Center.
Art. Science. Theatre. Music. Planets. It's all here in the Clay Center.
7. Learn something new at the Craik-Paton House.
This house's history dates all the way back to the Revolutionary War!
8. Climb the Criel Mound in South Charleston.
Along with the West Virginia State Museum, this ancient burial mound located just outside Charleston is an excellent way to learn about West Virginia's earliest inhabitants. It's a bit of a climb to the top, but the view once you get there is spectacular.
