Short But Sweet: How to Spend Only a Few Hours in Charleston, South Carolina

Pressed for time in Charleston, SC? Here’s how to see the highlights, from Rainbow Row to Sullivan’s Island, in just a few short hours.

Charleston is endlessly fascinating, with its pastel-painted homes, Spanish moss draped over live oak trees, and ever-present history. If you've never been, it warrants a visit, and an unhurried one. Of course, it's not always possible to get that time away. Luckily, Charleston can be appreciated even if you have just a few hours to spare. Below, I've outlined an itinerary for a short but sweet visit to Charleston, South Carolina.

Know before you go: It's easy to walk around downtown Charleston, but this half-day itinerary covers a lot of ground. You'll be exploring North Charleston, the historic district, and Sullivan's Island, so having a car will be ideal for getting around. And, if you truly have only a couple of hours to spare, you'll want to stick to the morning itinerary—the added afternoon excursion will require a little more time.

Morning Itinerary: Coffee and Sightseeing

Where to get coffee in Charleston

If you can get to town early, you'll benefit from your choice of fantastic coffee shops and quick breakfasts. I always like to start a day of sightseeing with a top-quality cappuccino, and what better place to do so than Sightsee Shop? This tucked-away coffee shop and boutique is popular for its high-quality pour-overs, espresso drinks, and light bites. It's the kind of place that has that hyper-local feel without being overly crowded.

After you've fueled up for the day, head to nearby Hampton Park, Charleston's biggest park. It boasts the largest floral display in the city—definitely don't miss the Rose Pavilion! While not technically an arboretum, the park offers a lovely display of native lowcountry trees and plants.

Charleston's Famous Historic Sites

No trip to Charleston, however brief, is complete without admiring some of the city's historic sites. The Battery and White Point Garden are must-sees, offering you a glimpse of the city's storied past and its location on the water. White Point Garden is located at the southern end of the Battery, in the heart of Charleston's famous historic district. You'll enjoy beautiful views of Fort Sumter in the distance, across from Charleston Harbor.

Continue your walk north along East Bay Street to one of the most photographed areas of Charleston: Rainbow Row. This iconic block of Georgian row houses symbolizes the city's charm, history, and character. It's the perfect spot to wrap up your morning, or, if you'd like to keep exploring, pop into one of Lower King Street's many beautiful art galleries.

If that's all the time you have for the day, rest assured that you've experienced some of Charleston's most popular landmarks. Got a little more time to spare? Hop in the car—we're headed to the beach!

Afternoon: Sullivan's Island for Seafood and Beach Strolls

Lunch on Sullivan's Island

Sullivan's Island is a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the excursion. About a 25-minute drive from the Battery, Sullivan's offers pristine beaches and fantastic restaurants. One recommendation for lunch is Sullivan's Fish Camp, where you'll find a range of raw bar menu items and classic seafood dishes. You can't go wrong with the fried fish sandwich or the lobster roll served with waffle-cut chips.

Sullivan's Island Beach

After lunch, enjoy a stroll along the beach as you reflect on a short yet very sweet few hours in Charleston. The beach here is stunning, though it has limited amenities compared to other beaches in the area. If time allows, wrap up your day with a drink at Poe's Tavern, famous for its laid-back vibes and delicious fish tacos. Otherwise, start scheming your return trip, because there are countless more things to discover in Charleston, SC!
