Go Apple Picking, Then Sleep In A Cabin Surrounded By Fall Foliage On This Weekend Getaway In South Carolina

Apple picking at MacGregor Orchard in South Carolina offers a perfect fall weekend getaway with fresh produce and scenic views.

Apple picking in South Carolina in the fall is a tradition that many look forward to each year. It’s an opportunity to support local farmers, to be involved in a more hands-on way in the process of sourcing cooking ingredients, and of course, the fresher those ingredients are, the better they taste when they reach your mouth! For the brief window of apple-picking season, we have the perfect fall weekend getaway in South Carolina for you.

One of the best areas for apple picking in South Carolina is the upstate. And what better place for this fun fall activity than MacGregor Orchard?

The orchard is positioned just off of the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway in the small town of Travelers Rest, ideal for seeing some of the best fall foliage in the state as well.

On over 20 acres, 11 different fruits in more than 100 varieties are grown by the husband-wife team who own the orchard, Stephens and Julia Gregory.

Fall, and especially during September and October, is prime apple season.

Picking apples is fun for the whole family!

Make sure to get some Granny Smiths, preferred by many for making applesauce and for baking, because they don't collapse or disintegrate when roasting or baking with them.

They’re also said to be the best for snacking while trying to lose weight.

But if you don’t want to pick your own apples, MacGregor’s has a stand with some you can buy, along with many items, including other fruits, vegetables, jams, jellies, pottery, and delicious homemade applesauce and cider.

If you want to keep some apples beyond the season, be sure to store them in a cold, dark, damp location.

You can also buy pasture-raised Black Angus beef from Glassy Mountain View Farms, where the cattle are raised about a mile from the orchard.

When you finish picking your apples, head to Finn’s Cabin, also in Travelers Rest.

There’s a huge deck if you’d like to continue enjoying the outdoors and the crisp mountain air.

The cabin sleeps six, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. There’s a spacious living room area with a fireplace to cozy up in front of in the evening.

And the kitchen is fully equipped if you want to dive in right away with some of those apples! Visit the listing for Finn’s Cabin to book your stay and for more information.

It’s the perfect fall weekend getaway. Visit MacGregor Orchard on the web or check it out on Facebook for its hours and other helpful information.
