Abbeville is located near the northwestern corner of South Carolina, close to the Georgia border on the west. This city is known as the “Birthplace and Deathbed of the Confederacy,” so you will find plenty of ties to Civil War history throughout the streets of Abbeville. In fact, history is what draws people into the town limits to explore the various sites and get lost in the awe-inspiring architecture. One of my favorite spots is the iconic Abbeville Trinity Episcopal Church. The commanding steeple is rather impressive, and I do love a good Gothic-style church.
One of the best ways to enjoy this small city is to park your car and stroll along the historic streets. The shady tree-covered park benches are a welcomed resting place as you soak in the experience of Abbeville. You can learn all about the past of the area on your walk by viewing the various historical markers all throughout the town. These echoes of the past will showcase Civil War stories and take a walk in the shoes of those who have gone before us in our country's most tumultuous time.
The Southern charm of the town is undeniable and lures you in further to see what each local shop and restaurant has to offer. The city has a similar vibe to what you would find in Charleston but in a more scaled-down way. There is even a section of town that has brightly colored buildings that remind me of Rainbow Row.
To extend your stay, there is a conveniently located tiny house that would be perfect for a home base while exploring Abbeville. The Petit Retreat is right in the heart of the town, with a small private space you can call your own.
