This Lakefront Town in Ohio Feels Like It Belongs in Europe

The Buckeye State might be landlocked, but thanks to our beloved Lake Erie, we hardly notice. Countless waterfront towns in Ohio offer a peaceful escape from the busyness of daily life, with picturesque views that belong on a postcard. One such place is Vermilion, located 35 miles west of Cleveland on Lake Erie. This quaint town is centered around the Vermilion River, and its maritime culture, along with stunning Queen Anne, Italianate, Arts and Crafts, and Victorian architecture, make it reminiscent of a coastal European village.

Vermilion’s motto is, “A Small Town on a Great Lake.” I love that slogan because it captures the essence of the town perfectly: a close-knit waterfront community of 10,000 that feels frozen in time, far removed from the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern world. 

As a visitor to Vermilion, you’ll never find yourself wanting for things to do. Embark on a stroll through the historic downtown area and discover locally-owned boutiques, restaurants, and galleries that give the town character and personality. The aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries and the sight of handmade clothing will remind you of Old World villages, where all your basic needs could be met with a simple walk down the street.

Vermilion is almost like a miniature Amsterdam, with the river and lake serving as a thoroughfare that brings passing boats to town. Boaters often dock here to spend the day enjoying the attractions before continuing on their journey, and visitors stroll along the lakefront, admiring ships bobbing on the water. 

Spend some time on Main Street Beach with your toes in the sand, or check out the Vermilion Lighthouse for some local history. While the current structure is a replica of the original structure built in 1877, it still offers important context. After reading about how the first Vermilion Lighthouse served the community faithfully for over 50 years, on cloudy days, look out to the horizon and take in the gloomy scene. You’ll feel like you’re on a remote Scottish island, the wind whipping your hair and the sea breeze chilling your skin. It’s quite peaceful, and benches invite you to relax and enjoy the views. You might even spot a bald eagle.

Vermilion’s architecture adds even more European flair. Walk or drive through the historic neighborhoods and admire the old homes, many of which once belonged to famous captains in the area, their ornate details a far cry from the cookie-cutter houses of today. Take a self-guided walking or driving tour, picking out your favorite homes and imagining what life was like in the days when Vermilion was a burgeoning maritime town.
