This Sporty Museum Is Worth the Drive From Cleveland

Baseball has always been my game. Football? I usually need someone to explain what just happened and why everyone is either celebrating or looking like they misplaced a winning lottery ticket. Even so, the minute I had the chance to visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, I was all in. I love museums, and I love people who care deeply about something, whether it's Renaissance paintings, vintage lunch boxes, or the perfect spiral pass. That kind of passion is contagious, and the Hall has it in abundance. Better yet, it's only about an hour from Cleveland, making it one of the best day trips from Cleveland.

The Hall of Busts was my favorite part (aside from the hot dog... more on that later). The room feels reverent. Bronze faces stretch beneath warm lighting, and conversations naturally soften to whispers. I asked an employee about the sculptures and learned every modern Hall of Fame bust has been created by Blair Buswell, who has sculpted more than 130 players and coaches since 1983. Somehow, knowing one artist shaped so much of the Hall's identity made the gallery even more meaningful.

The museum rewards curious visitors. I loved looking at players' shoes that ranged from surprisingly small to absolutely enormous, and the uniforms showed how the sport has evolved over the decades.

Interactive exhibits keep this Ohio museum lively. You can try on football pads, compare hand sizes to those of the best football players in history, and even play Madden NFL right next to a display featuring every Madden game ever released. It felt like flipping through decades of family game nights.

The Super Bowl gallery was another surprise. Seeing the championship rings together makes it easy to appreciate how dramatically their designs have changed over the years. Standing a few feet from the Vince Lombardi Trophy also has an unexpected gravity. Your brain immediately says, "Don't breathe on it." (I did; I couldn't help it.)

Another favorite was the hologram exhibit, which places you inside a locker room listening to legendary coaches deliver speeches. It feels immersive instead of gimmicky.

The Hall also celebrates women who helped change professional football, as well as chronicling the history of diversity and inclusion in the sport. These stories add another important layer to the museum.

What To Expect During Your Visit

I'll admit I occasionally got turned around, although that probably says more about me than the museum. Football fans will likely have a much easier time navigating. Plan to spend at least 3 or 4 hours exploring. If you want more context, the optional Insider's Tour shares behind-the-scenes stories you won't find on the exhibit signs.

One surprise? I had one of the best hot dogs of my life here. Toasted bun, the perfect snap, and not a single condiment needed.

Before you leave, make time for the gift shop. Every NFL team is represented, along with Hall-exclusive merchandise. I headed home with a Pittsburgh Steelers hat and, because I apparently collect them everywhere I go, another refrigerator magnet.

The drive from Cleveland takes about an hour via Interstate 77, making it an easy road trip. Parking is plentiful, and mornings tend to be the least crowded time to visit.

The Hall deserves the spotlight, but Canton is worth exploring, too. Browse the Canton Museum of Art, visit the historic Rhoda Wise Home, enjoy dinner at Bender's Tavern, or grab a pizza from Mike's Pizza. Adding one or two local stops turns the drive into a full day instead of just another museum visit.
