Bald Mountain Sounds Scary, But It’s One of the Best Hikes in New York

That's what I like most about the northern area of New York, far from the upstate region or the city and far away from any state or national borders — and that's where I found a scary hiking trail in New York that immediately fascinated me. At least, it seemed scary at first — not surprising, given that it's named after the segment that gave us one of the most menacing Disney villains of all time.

Bald Mountain, located in the rural Fulton Chain Wild Forest about an hour by car north of Utica, is a beautiful hike up a mountain that offers some of the best views in the region, as well as an amazing fire tower that makes you feel like you're alone in the sky. Of course, in return, it'll ask for a bit of fortitude and a sense of adventure. That's the kind of thing you come to expect when you're exploring these hidden corners of the Empire State — but don't worry, no giant winged kings of darkness in sight.

Why Is It Called "Bald Mountain"?

The term is actually fairly common around the Northeast, and historically referred to mountains with a treeless peak, offering a rocky vantage point with a clear view of the surrounding area. However, in Slavic mythology, these were seen as places of arcane power, heavily associated with witches. Of course, most people remember it from the iconic "Night on Bald Mountain" segment from Disney's Fantasia, where the massive demon Chernabog conducted an unholy dance party.

What the Hike Is Actually Like

New York's Bald Mountain is anything but haunted — it's gorgeous. However, it's a fairly challenging hike, coming in at only 1.8 miles but boasting a 416-foot elevation gain. You'll start in the woods with an uneven but fairly easy-to-navigate area, before beginning a steep ascent to get you to the summit, where you'll find the famous Rondaxe Fire Tower. The trail is a good hike for those experienced with moderately challenging terrain, but it can become slippery after rainstorms.

What to Know Before You Go

The Rondaxe Fire Tower is the most popular attraction on this remote trail, and it's open dawn to dusk daily just like the forest surrounding it. There is no admission fee to the tower or the forest, and that also means the area is fairly light on amenities. If you're interested in camping in the area, you're free to bring your own supplies for primitive camping in the surrounding forest, but local campsites and vacation rentals are also available in nearby towns.

In a word — yes! Bald Mountain seems like a hike with a scary name, but what you'll find here is unspoiled beauty and one of the best views in the Adirondack region once you ascend the fire tower. It's the perfect balance of challenging, thrilling, and safe, offering a great chance to see an area of New York state even many lifelong residents have never fully explored.
