New Jersey has some truly incredible small towns, from Lambertville to Haddonfield and Clinton to Stone Harbor. These amazing small towns are popular day trip destinations, but today we're featuring a few fantastic and often-overlooked small towns that deserve a little love, too. Not only are they great places to live, but they're also wonderful day trip destinations. Listed in no particular order, here are 10 underrated small towns in New Jersey:
1. Mount Tabor
Mount Tabor is a hidden gem of a town that was founded as a Methodist camp community in what is now Parsippany-Troy Hills. The gingerbread-style architecture is the main draw, and you can see it for yourself during one of the town's annual Victorian house tours.
2. Mount Holly
There's so much to do in this historic town! You'll find the haunted Burlington County Prison Museum, multiple breweries, the charming Robin's Nest restaurant, parks on the Rancocas Creek, and loads of events. Don't miss the annual Fire & Ice Festival or Witches Ball!
3. Boonton
This small town has a thriving Main Street, home to wonderful shops and restaurants like Boonton Coffee, Chili Willies (Mexican), and the Darress Theatre. We also love Grace Lord Park - a peaceful place with a beautiful waterfall. Don't miss the town's Dog Days of Summer sculpture event!
4. Bordentown
Bordentown borders the Delaware, Crosswicks Creek, and Blacks Creek. Waterfront views are abundant but what we love best is the shopping and dining. Under the Moon Cafe, Oliver A Bistro, and Properly Fueled are a few of our favorite restaurants. When it comes to shopping, don't miss the magical Broomstick Betty or the beloved Randy Now's Man Cave. The Man Cave has a great selection of gifts, one-of-a-kind sodas, concerts, movie nights, and more.
5. Caldwell
Best known for being the birthplace of President Grover Cleveland (visit the museum!), Caldwell has everything you need for a day of fun. There's shopping, dining, a small cinema, and picturesque park. They've got all types of cuisine, so you'll find whatever you're craving here. Check out Dough Artisan Pizzeria, Nori Sushi, or Cloverleaf Tavern.
6. Hopewell
This lovely little Victorian town near Princeton has art studios, antique shops (check out Tomato Factory), a small museum, and a surprising amount of eateries in under a square mile. The Blue Bottle Cafe and The Peasant Grill are among the top-rated.
7. Newton
Spring Street is the heart of this gem of a town. It offers a fire museum, theater with live shows, and great restaurants like The Barrel House (try the burgers) and Mi Rancho Mexican Grill.
8. Point Pleasant Beach
This town is perhaps the most criminally overlooked place in New Jersey. All too often, visitors skip the thriving downtown with loads of shops and restaurants. They've got consignment and antique shops, charming home goods stores, and the best Poke around (Raw Poke Bar). Point Pleasant Beach really is a gem of a New Jersey town!
9. Closter
Closter is a wonderful place to visit if you're into antiquing. At the corner of Old Hook and Schraalenburgh Roads in Closter, you'll find the beautiful Abram Demaree Homestead and Farm. The striking Colonial-era home dates back to 1720 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's also a treasure trove for antiques! On the other side of the coin, Closter is also home to New Jersey’s first and only Starbucks Reserve Bar, making this a place that defies any one category. You simply have to visit and experience Closter for yourself.
10. Burlington
This waterfront town has its own island and a fantastic main drag - High Street. We love UMMM Ice Cream Parlor, Olde City Quilts, Third State Brewing, and the Historic Burlington Antiques Emporium. Also in town, you'll find the Bridge Players Theatre Company and gorgeous Greenlanders Park.
