Marty’s Has Been Named New Jersey’s Top Cheeseburger Multiple Times, and It Started in Fort Lee

What opened in Fort Lee in 2020 with Pat LaFrieda beef and six fry options now has four locations across Bergen County and Jersey City. The formula hasn't changed.

Marty's first opened in Fort Lee in September 2020 with a focused menu: 5.5-ounce fresh-beef burgers on Martin's potato rolls, hand-cut double-fried Idaho fries, and 16-ounce milkshakes.

The beef is sourced from Pat LaFrieda and delivered daily. Never frozen. Cooked to order every time. Named New Jersey's top cheeseburger multiple times since opening.

Four locations and counting, with each one following the same kitchen standards. It made a national ranking of the best burger joints.

The family-business ethos extends to the sourcing: the Pat LaFrieda relationship is maintained across all locations, ensuring consistent beef quality whether you're eating in Fort Lee or Jersey City.

What to Order

The Rise 'N Shine is the signature build: Taylor ham, fried egg, and cheese. It brings the classic New Jersey breakfast sandwich sensibility directly into burger form.

The BBQ version adds sharp cheddar, jalapeños, smoked bacon, and frizzled onions. Fries come in six preparations: original, salt and vinegar, disco fries, truffle parmesan, Old Bay, and cheese. Hand-cut from fresh Idaho potatoes, double-fried in 100 percent peanut oil.

Banana pudding, made fresh with cream, bananas, and Nilla wafers, is the signature dessert. It's worth ordering even if you think you're full. For more on the food scene nearby, see New Jersey's best new restaurants.

Four Locations, Still Family-Owned

Marty's added Jersey City Heights in 2022, Hackensack in 2024, and Jersey City's McGinley Square in 2025. Each new location follows the same kitchen standards as the original Fort Lee spot.

The vintage advertisement aesthetic at most locations gives each restaurant a timeless diner character that pairs naturally with the menu.

The Fort Lee original opened in September 2020, in the middle of a period when the restaurant industry was the last thing anyone would invest in. The gamble paid off because the food was genuinely good and the neighborhood was hungry for exactly this kind of focused, quality-first operation.

Jersey City Heights and Hackensack followed as the reputation spread. Each new location has maintained the Pat LaFrieda sourcing and the daily-fresh commitment that defined the Fort Lee original.
