The Midwest may have something of a reputation as being pretty staunchly rooted in Americana, but there's a surprising amount of European history here, too - for example, in the late 1800s, many Scandinavians and Germans immigrated to Kansas, and their influence is still seen today. The town of Lindsborg, KS is known as "Little Sweden," and it's a delightfully charming spot for a day trip. The town was founded by Swedish immigrants and celebrates that heritage, with statues of Dala horses scattered throughout town and the bi-annual Svensk Hyllningsfest festival. This is such a unique town in Kansas and it's not too shocking that you'll find several Swedish shops and restaurants here, with one of our favorites being Hemslojd, Inc., an adorable European store in Lindsborg located right on Main Street.
The shop's name is derived from a Swedish term meaning "handicraft," which is fitting since the products here are handcrafted by skilled woodworkers.
Woodworkers and artists are present in the shop most weekdays, so you'll get to see them busy with their crafts.
It's a wonderful place to just stop and browse, and it's fascinating to see the items as they get made.
In addition to handmade crafts, the shop also carries many imported goods that were made in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries.
There's a huge selection of Dala horses here in every color of the rainbow, but you can also get Swedish books, t-shirts, toys, and home decor items here.
This little European shop in Kansas is the perfect place to stop for souvenirs on a trip to Lindsborg, KS, the Little Sweden of Kansas.
