Why Dawsonville, Georgia, the Gateway of Amicalola Falls State Park, Is Worth a Visit in Its Own Right

With family-friendly attractions and endless outdoor fun, Dawsonville is worth a stop on your next trip to Amicalola Falls.

It’s safe to say that Amicalola Falls State Park is a must-visit destination in Georgia. It’s one of my favorite state parks, and it’s easy to see why. After all, who wouldn’t want to witness the 729-foot Amicalola Falls, Georgia’s tallest waterfall? So, of course, this iconic spot is at the top of our bucket lists. It’s arguably one of the most visited state parks in Georgia, and I bet you would agree. Naturally, the park deserves its shine, but folks, including me, often overlook Dawsonville, where this outdoor playground is located. But have no worries, I am here to change that! With its historical landmarks, family-friendly attractions, and endless outdoor recreational opportunities, this gateway destination to Amicalola Falls State Park is certainly worth a visit, too.

Brief History of Dawsonville

With approximately 5,000 residents, Dawsonville might be a mini city, but it’s brimming with small-town vibes. This mountain community, incorporated in 1859, was originally settled by the Cherokees with deep agricultural roots. However, due to its remote location at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Dawsonville developed a reputation for moonshine during Prohibition. The need to transport illegal alcohol along the winding mountain roads led to the rise of skilled, fast-paced drivers in the area. So, it’s no surprise that the community is famous for its motorsport drivers like NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott.

Today, moonshine and motorsport are still etched into the heart of this quaint little city. You can celebrate the legacy at the Mountain Moonshine Festival in October or by visiting the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame museum. Or stop by the Grandaddy Mimm's Distilling Co., where you can even sample the authentic beverage. Of course, the community has more to offer than just fast cars and alcohol. After all, it’s home to Amicalola Falls State Park, which is a must-visit. Aside from the park, there is so much to do here. There are classic restaurants, art galleries, incredible shops, endless outdoor recreation, and more.

Is Dawsonville Worth a Trip?

Absolutely, it is! Whether you’re visiting for a day or a weekend getaway, you won’t run out of fun activities to do. One of the most popular attractions in Dawsonville is Atlanta Motorsports Park. Car racing and go-kart enthusiasts will have a blast here. Kids 12 years old and up can test their need for speed on the go-kart tracks. This is a fun venue for the entire family that also offers free events throughout the year.

For a change of pace, check out the cultural venues in town. The Around Back at Rocky's Place Folk Art Gallery and the Bowen Center for the Arts help to support local artists and talent through their exhibits and workshops. You may even find a unique piece to add to your collection. History buffs, take a free self-guided tour through the Dawson County Historic Jail. The historic 1881 building offers a quick glimpse of the prison cells that housed illegal bootleggers.

Foodies and those seeking retail therapy, this is the destination to be. You can find everything from famous chains to mom-and-pop joints in the area. If you’re in the mood for a classic hot dog, burger, and fries, the Varsity Dawsonville is the spot for you. The beloved drive-in chain is a favorite joint for locals and visitors alike. Celebrating a special occasion? Step things up a notch and enjoy cocktails and seasonal American cuisine at The Blue Bicycle A Bistro.

Aside from the restaurants, the shops and boutiques in Dawsonville will keep you busy for hours. Don’t leave without checking out the North Georgia Premium Outlets. You could spend hours here browsing through over 100 designer stores.

Of course, no visit to Dawsonville is complete without outdoor recreation. The mountain city is a haven for waterfalls and water activities. Sure, it makes sense to visit Amicalola Falls State Park, but I’d recommend the three-mile Bearden Falls Trail inside Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, too. As you wander through dense forests with serene water views, you’ll be rewarded with the 200-foot cascade, Bearden Falls. For extra adventure, spend the day soaking up the breathtaking scenes on the Etowah River Paddle Trail. Don’t have a water vessel? Have no worries, book a tubing or kayaking trip with Dawson Forest Canoe & Kayaking Take Out. You won’t regret it!

While the community is wonderful all year long, fall is one of the best times for a day trip to Dawsonville. Leaf peepers will be mesmerized by Amicalola Falls, surrounded by spectacular autumn colors. Plus, the kids will love the fall festivities at Uncle Shuck's Corn Maze and Burt's Pumpkin Farm. With all there is to do in Dawsonville, obviously, you’ll need more than a day here. Luckily, I found this four-bedroom lake house that is close to all the attractions and just six minutes from Amicalola Falls. It’s a perfect place to rest after a day of exploring.

As you can tell, there are lots of things to do in Dawsonville, Georgia. Between its small-town vibes, outdoor recreation, and family-friendly activities, you won’t regret a trip to this gateway destination to Amicalola Falls State Park.
