Delaware might be one of the smallest states, but it sure is mighty. That’s especially true if you’re searching for places that shine brightly with colors. Not to mention the lovely gardens at Winterthur that are pure color magic. Then the charming town of Lewes is one of the prettiest places for a weekend trip in Delaware. 1. Rehoboth Beach, a Coastal Gem Popping With Colors

If you want a blast of color around every corner, Rehoboth Beach delivers on that. Here, the iconic boardwalk with neon signs, carnival rides, and cheery candy stores like Candy Kitchen Shoppes will bring out your fun side. The brightly multi-colored umbrellas lining the sandy shoreline add drama to the sparkling Atlantic Ocean. But it’s the sunsets that will win you over. 

Sometimes words aren’t enough to describe the spectacular sunsets at Rehoboth Beach. As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, the sky transitions to soft hues of yellow, orange, and lilac. And with reflections on the ocean and the gentle waves, the entire scene feels surreal. It’s easy to see why we named this Delaware beach town, heaven on earth—it’s truly spectacular. 

2. Indian River Inlet Bridge, a Glowing Coastal Gateway

Not too far from Rehoboth Beach is another colorful spot that is worth visiting. Located within Delaware Seashore State Park is the Indian River Inlet Bridge — officially known as the Charles W. Cullen Bridge. Spanning across the Indian River Inlet, the striking cable bridge is a favorite spot for photographers. 

It could be because the bridge features 92 LED lights and fixtures that glow against the evening sky. The reflection of the lights on the river as the tides roll gently adds life to the scene. Best spots to snap pics? Along the north and south sides of the Indian River Inlet beaches. After your spectacular light show, stop by Bethany Beach, one of the best coastal towns in Delaware.   

3. Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, a Fairytale Woodland

Winterthur needs no introduction; it’s arguably one of the most popular attractions in Delaware. Inside, you’ll find the whimsical woodland, Enchanted Woods, where I believe fairies actually exist. On the property is the historic DuPont family mansion surrounded by 60 acres of gardens, offering vibrant seasonal blooms. 

In spring, stroll by the reflection ponds and breezy pathways brimming with lovely azaleas, magnolias, and cheery daffodil and tulip blooms. The curated gardens burst with lush greenery and perennials in the summer. Fall has its own magic as the woodlands blaze with fiery reds, oranges, and golds. Best time to visit? Nature lovers and photographers, you can’t go wrong when you plan a trip here in mid-April or late October.

4. Lewes, Historic Charm in Full Color

Locals will tell you that Lewes is one of the prettiest towns for a weekend trip in Delaware, and it’s easy to see why. The folks here live their lives in full color. As you stroll through the oldest city in Delaware, also known as “The First Town in The First State,” you’ll see 18th-century historic homes painted in cheerful sea-foam greens, bright yellows, and soft blues. In the warmer months, the streets and gardens in the coastal town come alive, lined with hydrangeas, roses, perennials, and more. 

Of course, I can’t forget Delaware Bay, where the coastline has splashes of color everywhere. And when the sun sets over the breathtaking waterways, it’s pure color magic. If you want to see some of the most beautiful places in Lewes, plan a scenic drive along the Historic Lewes Byway. Along the way, you can snap pics of the pretty coastline at Cape Henlopen State Park, historical landmarks, colorful homes, tranquil gardens, and more. A trip to this photogenic town will make you feel alive; it’s the perfect backdrop for a Hallmark movie.  

Tips for Visiting and Photographing Colorful Spots in Delaware

When visiting these beautiful destinations in Delaware, bring your imagination and your sense of adventure. Obviously, don’t leave your phone, cameras, or equipment at home; you’ll regret it. For Lewes, plan your trip in late spring to early summer when the gardens and flower boxes are in full bloom. Or visit from September to early October to snap pics of the picture-perfect sunsets over the bay. 

Winterthur is closed to the public from early January to February, but if you’re a member, you can explore the grounds during this time—a nice perk if you ask me. No matter when you visit, you’ll find inspiration and beautiful Instagram-worthy scenes. You really can’t go wrong here. As for the Rehoboth Beach and Indian River Inlet Bridge, plan your trip during sunset for the best lighting, but stay until the skies get dark.
