Endless Outdoor Adventures Await in These 5 Small Towns in Illinois

Growing up in the Land of Lincoln, getting outside was always important to my family. While we lived outside of Chicago, my folks did a great job of showing me that there was so much more to Illinois than just city living. Throughout my 30-plus years as a resident of the Prairie State, I’ve gotten to know and explore five of the most outdoorsy towns in Illinois, each offering hiking, biking, boating, and so much more.

1. Oregon, Illinois

Located in northern Illinois, Oregon is one of the most special places of my childhood. There are many outdoor activities to enjoy, no matter the time of year. In warmer months, paddling down the Rock River is a must-do activity. As you make your way down the watery pathway, you’ll be treated to views of sandstone bluffs, forest, and the 48-foot statue honoring Chief Black Hawk. If you don’t feel like working up a sweat, you can book a cruise on the Pride of Oregon. My family always did the brunch cruise, and I can still smell the sweet scent of delicious orange rolls that greeted me as I stepped on the boat. Additionally, one can enjoy hiking and biking trails in and around both Lowden State Park and Castle Rock State Park in Oregon.

2. Shabbona, Illinois

Also in northern Illinois, Shabbona is another beloved adventure town in Illinois for my family. The town is home to Shabbona Lake State Park. I have many memories of fishing along the shores of the lake and even seeing water snakes swim by.  The park is also home to a campground, where you can book a variety of campsites and camper cabins, as well as a boathouse where you can rent a variety of motorized and non-motorized watercraft, and even enjoy lunch at the Dockside Cafe. For those looking to get their feet on land, Shabbona Lake State Park offers an excellent network of hiking and biking trails, as well as playgrounds for the little ones. In town, I love to grab breakfast at Shabbona Cafe before heading out on adventures. It's been around for as long as I can remember and always delivers a quality, delicious, small-town diner experience.

3. Galena, Illinois

Galena is a town in northwestern Illinois rich in history. It was the home of President Ulysses S. Grant, and President Abraham Lincoln paid a couple of visits. While the town is often thought of for its deep historical roots and charming atmosphere, it's also one of the best small towns in Illinois for nature lovers. My favorite outdoor activity in Galena is skiing at Chestnut Mountain Resort. In the summer, the resort offers ziplining, mountain biking, mini golf, and boat cruises down the Mississippi River. There are even opportunities for horseback riding and hiking with goats in this outdoorsy town.

4. Utica, Illinois

Utica, Illinois, is a popular day trip from Chicago. Located about 90 minutes southwest of the city, Utica serves as a central hub for some of the best outdoor destinations in Illinois. Utica is very popular for its proximity to Starved Rock State Park. I’ve spent countless summers exploring Starved Rock State Park and many birthdays renting a cabin there with my friends and family. Utica’s central location provides ample opportunities to explore the many hiking and biking trails in and around both Starved Rock State Park and Matthiessen State Park. You can also rent a boat to explore the Illinois River. Further, you can venture to the nearby Buffalo Rock State Park and see the roaming bison who call the park home.

5. Makanda, Illinois

Lastly, we head south to Makanda, Illinois. This small town in southern Illinois is the gateway to Giant City State Park. Within the park, you’ll find ample opportunities for rock climbing, hiking, and biking. One can also enjoy the thrill of zip-lining with Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour or kayaking at Little Grassy Lake Campground. Personally, I’ve always enjoyed walking around and taking in the incredible rock formations at Giant City State Park that you just don’t see in the big city.
