Chicago’s Heavy Metal Burger Bar Names Every Burger After a Band

Kuma's Corner in Avondale opened in 2005 with half-pound patties, a loud soundtrack, and burger names like Slayer, Black Sabbath, and Iron Maiden. It became a Chicago institution.

Every burger at Kuma's Corner is named after a heavy metal band. The Slayer, the Black Sabbath, the Iron Maiden, the Pantera. Each one is a half-pound patty on a pretzel roll built to match the spirit of its namesake.

Kuma's opened in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood in 2005. Guy Fieri named it a top-five U.S. restaurant. TIME Magazine named the Ghost Burger, which briefly featured an unconsecrated communion wafer, one of the most influential burgers of all time. Neither of those things happened by accident.

For a city with as deep a dining scene as Chicago, that's a real argument to make and a real argument to win. It made 50 burger joints worth the trip.

The brand has expanded to multiple Chicago locations and Indianapolis, and in spring 2026, founder Ron Cain was announcing franchise plans. The original Avondale location remains the heart of all of it.

What to Order

Start with the Kuma Burger: bacon, cheddar, and a fried egg on a pretzel roll. It's the house classic and the benchmark for any first visit. Once you understand what the kitchen does at baseline, the specialty builds make more sense.

The Slayer, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath builds push further: jalapeno bacon jam, bleu cheese, and creative sauce combinations that earn their band names. A rotating monthly Burger of the Month, submitted by fans and vetted by the kitchen, ensures there's always something new.

The make-your-own mac and cheese has developed into its own institution at Kuma's. The beer selection is deep and metal-appropriate. The music is loud. None of that is an accident. For more on the food scene nearby, see the best burgers in Chicago.

From Corner Bar to Chicago Institution

Founder Ron Cain opened Kuma's at the corner of Belmont and Francisco avenues with a simple mission: support your community, eat beef, bang your head.

In 2024, Kuma Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing long-term COVID impact, while continuing to operate all locations. By spring 2026, Cain was announcing franchise expansion plans internationally. The Avondale location continues to operate as the original.

No reservations. No minors after 10 p.m. These rules are on the wall and they're enforced.

The no-reservations policy means every visit to Kuma's involves some degree of waiting. Regulars treat that as part of the ritual rather than an inconvenience. The bar is worth sitting at while you wait.

The rotating monthly Burger of the Month, submitted by fans and built by the kitchen, has produced genuinely memorable combinations over the years. Each release draws its own social media following among Chicago burger regulars. For more of the state's dining history, see iconic Chicago restaurants worth knowing.
