Locals Love This Hidden Gem Swimming Hole in Illinois (That Doesn’t Feel Like the U.S.)
Uncover a hidden swimming hole in Illinois with gentle waterfalls, adventurous vibes, and a local reputation as one of the state's best summer escapes.
Waterfall tiers cascading down the sandstone into the freshwater lake below. Rippling past on a muggy Midwestern summer day, this swimming hole is a favorite among Illinoisians and for good reason. The aptly named Kinkaid Lake Spillway gives us the respite we crave away from the crowded beaches along Lake Michigan. Surrounded by thousands of acres of nearby forest, it's not quite the aqua waters of Dunn's River Falls in Jamaica, but it lacks neither charm nor scenic beauty.
Why Locals Love This Hidden Swimming Hole
Growing up, Brother Bear was one of my favorite Disney films. To this day, the bear gathering at the salmon run still makes me long for rushing water in a swimmable spot, the kind of swimmable water that isn't as intimidating as a tall waterfall in Costa Rica because that gave me the heebie-jeebies. But rest assured, you don't have to venture out to Alaska, Canada, or even out to the dreamy Dunn's River Falls. Kinkaid Lake Spillway looks like a picturesque animated moment without being surrounded by giant spawning salmon—or bears.
Located within Shawnee National Forest, this idyllic Illinois swimming hole reminds me less of Huck Finn and more of Kodiak. It is entrenched in the nature all around it, providing a tranquil space to swim away your worries. The lake water reflects the hues of green around it from neighboring trees; it feels like that lake you always swam in as a kid—one that Midwestern kids like me knew long before we knew the ocean. Even as the warm weather subsides, as it does in the Midwest, the autumn leaves and tufts of snow will bring you back again to see the spot in a whole new way.
What To Expect During Your Visit

Some parts of the swimming hole may be shallower, but it isn't uncommon for it to get to between 12 and 15 feet deep. That drop-off really makes this more of a swimming hole than a swimming spot. If you're feeling particularly spry, you can jump into the deeper parts of the swimming area, though personally I'm too chicken (and clumsy). I prefer my activities on the calmer side.
Near the parking lot at 432 North Spillway Road, Gorham, Illinois, you'll find bathrooms and an outdoor eating area. A mile or so walk down the nearby path brings you to the swimming area, though the walk itself is pretty easy.
Tips Before You Visit Kinkaid Lake Spillway

Keep in mind that there is no bathroom area once you reach the Spillway. Be sure to stop before exiting the parking lot area. You should also bring water shoes or sturdy hiking sandals, especially if you'll be walking around the rocks. The surroundings get slippery when wet, and there are no lifeguards on duty, so visit at your own risk.
Illinoisans have been enjoying the water at Kinkaid Lake Spillway for decades. Although Kinkaid Lake was created as a freshwater supply for Jackson County, it has spilled over (pun intended) to give the community and visitors alike a place to enjoy the elements. While folks can be surprised that a place as picturesque as a world-famous spot in Jamaica can be, or even sights seen in nearby Canada, Midwesterners know all too well that these places are as much a part of our backyards as custard is on a hot summer day.
