The Best Waterfront Stays in Illinois for a Scenic Escape
These waterfront rentals in Illinois offer stunning views, unique stays, and unforgettable escapes on the water.
Shimmering figures of wild birds of prey perched on a nearby tree. Watching, hopeful, that a fish will leap from the water with just enough time for them to snatch it. All the while, you, escaping the go-go-go of life, are snuggled up in a deck chair, your own perch, taking it all in. When you escape to one of the waterfront rentals in Illinois, this is exactly the kind of scene you can wake up to, coffee in hand, for a slow day of relaxation.
Don't get me wrong, I love Chicago. This city has my whole heart. Yet, it's good to know that a secluded lake vacation is not far away. The kind you find in waterfront towns like Crystal Lake. And these four waterfront rentals are some of the dreamiest you'll find in my home state.
1. Space Cowboy Lake Domes - Brookport, Illinois
Located along the private Hohman Lake, the Space Cowboy Lake Domes give a whole new perspective on sleeping under the stars. These comfortable glamping domes have lake views, a full private bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and a surrounding deck for all the stargazing you could want. It's certainly one of the most unique Airbnbs I've seen in Illinois.
Outside the futuristic yet cozy and rustic geodomes, you'll find a hot tub, outdoor shower, fire pit, and even a grilling area. Plus, guests have access to the property's kayaks for some much-needed lake time. This spot is perfect for up to four, perhaps envisioning a unique getaway with friends.
2. Hillside Haven Cabin - Cobden, Illinois
Tucked away on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, you'll find this homey, one-bedroom lakeside retreat. By day, the cabin with a water view has an expansive deck and outdoor space for spending time in nature, while nighttime is reserved for unparalleled star views.
The cabin's rustic aesthetic is complemented by modern amenities such as a hot tub, television, Wi-Fi, and a fireplace. While it has one bedroom, it can sleep up to four guests—though we think this is the perfect romantic getaway spot for two.
3. White Oak Cabin - Makanda, Illinois
Not far from Giant City State Park or the Shawnee Wine Trail, the White Oak Cabin is a forest-green A-frame cabin just off a lake. While it shares property with two other cabins, it is otherwise surrounded by nature. The meadow around it is dotted with wildflowers and natural fauna for a dreamy getaway.
With two queen beds, this cabin can sleep up to four between the loft and the lower bedroom. It has a smart TV, a hot tub, Wi-Fi, a charcoal grill, and views for days. Plus, guests can use the property's kayaks or go fishing on the lake! This cabin is ideal for couples, small families, and even pets who need some wild outdoor time.
4. Spring River Escape - Moline, Illinois
With scenic views along the Rock River, this waterfront home is the epitome of small living on a big canvas. Its minimalist, retro-chic-inspired charm has everything you could want in a 70s bungalow without going back in time to an age without modern comforts.
There are two bedrooms, both equipped with a queen-sized bed, a fire pit, a bathtub (with shower), and a record player to keep the good times rollin'. It isn't uncommon to spot bald eagles or herons while you nature-watch along the water. Or if you prefer to stay in, the smart TV is around for a vintage movie night of your dreams. This funky spot is definitely a must for friends looking to escape from city life.
From retro hangout vibes to romantic nights full of stars, each of these four waterfront rentals in Illinois offers something different. While I love the synchronicity that all four can also sleep up to four, each one truly provides a glimpse of Illinois you may not otherwise see. We might be the Prairie State, but anyone who spends enough time here knows that there is a lot more to Illinois than just Chicago, da Bears, cornfields, and a lot of Abraham Lincoln statues. Why not see its shimmering waterfront views for yourself?
