Visit the Hidden Gem Small Town Right Next Door to Castle Rock State Park

100 miles northwest of Chicago is a small town near Castle Rock State Park. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been visiting Oregon, Illinois. My parents have been visiting annually since before I was even born. Located along the shores of the Rock River and surrounded by forest and sandstone bluffs, this little town is a little-known base camp for outdoor adventure in Illinois. 

Why This Town Is the Perfect Base for Castle Rock State Park

Oregon, Illinois, is the perfect home base for visiting Castle Rock State Park, as it is located within the town itself. Getting to the state park is a less-than-10-minute drive from downtown or a 15 to 20-minute bike ride. It's incredibly close to anything you might be doing in downtown Oregon. 

One of my favorite parts of Castle Rock State Park is the opportunity to see bald eagles flying about. You can see them year-round, but your best chance is during the winter months, when they fly around the park's dams hunting for fish.

What To Do in Oregon

There are a lot of things to do to keep you busy in this small town near Castle Rock State Park. My family came up every October for the annual Autumn on Parade festival, where one could shop at seemingly endless local booths, watch the parade, and enjoy fall-themed snacks. 

A must-do activity when visiting during the warmer months is to take a ride on the Pride of Oregon. This 102-foot-long paddlewheel boat cruises up and down the Rock River. There are a variety of different cruise options available, but I personally love the brunch cruise. They serve some delicious orange rolls that are a core memory of my childhood. 

Additionally, Oregon is home to Lowden State Park. This state park is home to the iconic 48-foot  monument honoring Chief Black Hawk. You can find plenty of hiking and biking trails that give you views of the statue, or rent a kayak and paddle down the river for views from the water.

There are also plenty of long-standing local restaurants that are worth checking out during your time in Oregon. Jay’s Drive-In is an authentic Americana diner experience where I’ve been enjoying burgers and shakes for decades. The Red Apple is a classic small-town breakfast joint that I still never miss when in town. In recent years, up-and-coming spots like the Ogle County Brewery have popped up, bringing local craft beers to the area. Be sure to swing by some of the shops like Route 64 Vintage, White Pines Mercantile, and Don’s Flamingo Place.

Where To Stay Nearby

There are a variety of options for staying in Oregon, Illinois. Growing up, we either stayed in town at the Paddle Wheel Inn or just outside of town at a cabin in White Pines Forest State Park. However, there are a variety of unique Airbnbs in Oregon, such as the Goose Island Cabin that sits right along the Rock River. Or, a beautiful historic cottage that’s perfect for walking around downtown Oregon.

What To Know Before You Go

Visiting from spring through fall is the best time to explore this hidden-gem town in Illinois. During the warmer months, Oregon comes to life, and you’ll find more people out exploring nature and enjoying local festivals and events. With the exception of major festivals, the town tends not to get overcrowded. As a result, you shouldn’t have a hard time parking, and you won’t feel overrun by people when exploring the parks. That said, it's always a good idea to visit the state park earlier rather than later for the most peace and quiet.

As you can see, Oregon, Illinois, is truly an underrated, charming small town near Castle Rock State Park. While a trip to the state park may be the reason you come, there is so much more to do if you extend your trip a night or two. Whether visiting from a big city like Chicago or a neighboring community, you'll find that Oregon is a small town with plenty to offer in outdoor recreation, shopping, dining, lodging, and more.
