Crystal Lake is a little-known waterfront town in Illinois. Just 45 miles northwest of Chicago, Crystal Lake should be high on your radar as we approach the warmer months.
Best Time To Visit Crystal Lake
Crystal Lake, Illinois, is always great to visit. However, as the temperature begins to rise and the sun stays out for longer, the late spring and summer months are the best time to visit Crystal Lake. The highlight of this town is the lake.
Crystal Lake is 238 acres. Across this beautiful body of water, you’ll find two beaches. The sandy shores are called the Crystal Lake Main Beach and West Beach. At the Main Beach, visitors will find a swimming area, a boat launch, a band shell, a boat house, a playground, and picnic tables for rent. The West Beach also includes an area for swimming and a concession stand.
Furthermore, the town of Crystal Lake is also home to Three Oaks Recreation Area. Formerly a quarry, the area has been transformed into an outdoor playground. Here, visitors can enjoy swimming, scuba diving classes, boat rentals, trails, a spray park, and much more. For a state in the middle of the country, it's clear why Crystal Lake is one of the ultimate hidden waterfront destinations in Illinois.
Strolling Along Crystal Lake’s Main Street
While Crystal Lake has gained popularity for its outdoor recreation, visitors should know that the town itself is well worth a visit year-round. Permanently settled in the late 1800s, Crystal Lake offers a colorful downtown district.
Check out shopping staples like the Crystal Lake Antique Mall, or grab your meats from the veteran-owned Kalck's Butcher Shop. Alternatively, refuel at Carlos Pancake House or Crystal Lake Brewing. There are so many fantastic local businesses scattered on and around this charming main street in Illinois.
Why This Little-Known Waterfront Town in Illinois Is So Charming
What makes Crystal Lake so special is how many incredible things to do in packs in one place. Being so close to Lake Michigan and Chicago, it's easy to assume the greater Chicago suburbs wouldn’t compete with a Great Lake. However, it quickly becomes obvious that just isn’t the case. The town is home to two large water-based recreation areas, as well as smaller ponds and parks scattered throughout the community of more than 40,000 people. On top of that, Crystal Lake offers a vibrant downtown district that can stand on its own. With breweries, restaurants, cafes, ma-and-pa shops, and everything in between, there is something to feed every interest.
If you’re in the area visiting Chicago, hop on the Union Pacific Northwest train line from the Ogilvie Transportation Center. In just about an hour, you’ll be in the heart of Crystal Lake. It's the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the Windy City for either a few hours or even a weekend, and one of the best small towns in Illinois to visit.
