I still hear people refer to Iowa as "flyover country" sometimes, and it always baffles me, because it's clear they've never had the chance to visit the Hawkeye State and its unique natural and cultural landscape. You've got small towns straight out of Europe, some of the most beautiful and diverse state parks in the region, and some one-of-a-kind attractions—including a truly unique bridge that looks like the Golden Gate Bridge when you're traversing it at just the right moment.

Welcome to the High Trestle Trail Bridge, spanning half a mile near Madrid, Iowa, and offering some of the most spectacular views in the Midwest. This is one of Iowa's newest A-list attractions; it was only completed in 2011. It's part of the larger High Trestle Trail, which spans 24 miles from Ankeny to Woodward and offers access to some of Iowa's best state parks. However, the highlight is the trip over this one-of-a-kind bridge, which transforms like you won't believe when the sun goes down, and the High Trestle Trail Bridge becomes the brightest spot in Iowa.

On the largest historic bridges around the United States, you'll often be rushing through the experience on a car or caught in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Here, the bridge is just part of the experience on the High Trestle Trail. If you take the whole journey, you'll come across countless beautiful spots to explore.

Plan Your Visit

No matter what you do, make sure to time part of your visit so you can take a ride at night - after the sun goes down, the bridge is illuminated with neon lights. This is partially for safety, as the bridge is open 24-7, but it also turns the whole experience into a stunning large-scale art experience. The area is beautiful during all four seasons, but the fall foliage around the Des Moines River is especially spectacular.
